Chapter 38

-Isabella Di Luca-

*1 year later*

Everything is finally how it should be for all of us. I want to say everything is finally back to normal, but we never really had this kind of normal before, and I'm loving every second of this new beginning for all of us. I could finally say I'm living my best life instead of just getting through each day for the sake of surviving. And it's all thanks to my family. Everything I am and have now is all because of them.

Here is a quick recap of what happened after Luciano decided to kill himself.

I didn't exactly see it happen, but as soon as I heard the loud bang of the gun, my heart almost stopped. I barely know him; I only know him based on the things my uncle, cousin, and brothers would tell me, but I remember feeling bad about him, and I still do until now. He's not my father; Lorenzo will always have that position in my heart, but sometimes I do think about how, if only our mother hadn't died, maybe he would've continued being a good father to all of us.

What they say about him is true: Luciano loved his wife more than he loved his children.

His name was never mentioned again after he died.

But I'd like to think that he's finally together with his beloved wife.

After that day, I also learned our family's biggest secret that they have been hiding from me: that they are in the mafia. I had a hard time understanding it when they sat me down and explained everything to me. I know I should be scared, but I'm not. I could never be scared of the people who pulled me out of the hell I was in. For me, my brothers would always be my saviors and protectors. Gio was the one who helped me sort of accept it since he's the only one who is not really part of the mafia, and I don't want to be either. I want to continue my dream of being a doctor, just like him and our mother.

Aside from all of that, a lot has happened to all of us.

Uncle Ivan, my first savior and the best uncle ever, is usually in Russia, but he would always make sure to visit us two or three times a month, and he would just love to spoil me, Nicco, and little Gabbie with a lot of presents. Sometimes we would also go to him there in Russia, and he would always take us on a trip in all of the cities, towns, and villages there. So it's safe to say that my favorite uncle is doing quite well for himself.

Kirill, my favorite cousin in the whole world, is just continuing to be the funniest and most chaotic person I know. And now he's finally engaged! He met Iris when he was in America for some sort of work; they had been dating for five months before he asked her hand in marriage, to which she of course said yes. Iris is beautiful and so full of life; the two of them really are a match made in heaven. It's like Kiri found the girl version of himself in Iris. So I guess that's why no one really made a comment about how fast they got engaged after only dating for five months.

And don't even get me started with my brothers.

Nicco, my partner in crime, graduated high school just last month, and he even got an award for being the MVP of his football team. All of us are so happy and proud of him, especially Enzo, who actually shed a tear or two when he watched Nicco on the stage. He's still undecided on the major he will take in college, so he's just relaxing for now. But do you know who his new best friend is? Francis! Yes, much to my complete surprise, the two of them have gotten quite along for the past year, as both of them found out they have so much in common. The three of us would always hang out, but sometimes I think I'm the one who's the third wheel whenever we do hang out together. But it's fun seeing the two of them being the best of friends now.
