Layla sat in her room, surrounded by the soft glow of fairy lights. It had been weeks since her breakup with Ashton, and while she was slowly healing, his words and their final encounter still lingered in her mind. She couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to Ashton's distance than he had let on.
One afternoon, Layla received a message from Sarah. "Hey, Layla. Can you come over? I think you need to hear something."
Curious and slightly apprehensive, Layla made her way to Sarah's house. When she arrived, Sarah greeted her with a solemn expression. "Layla, I've been talking to Tyler, and he told me something about Ashton."
Layla frowned, her heart skipping a beat. "What is it?"
Sarah took a deep breath. "Apparently, Ashton has been struggling with depression and PTSD for a while now. Tyler said he found out when they had a heart-to-heart after you and Ashton broke up."
Layla's mind raced, trying to process this new information. "I had no idea. Ashton never talked to me about any of this."
"I don't think he wanted you to worry," Sarah said gently. "But it might explain why he's been so distant."
Layla nodded slowly, a mix of emotions swirling inside her. "I wish he had told me. Maybe I could have helped."
Sarah squeezed her hand. "Sometimes people have a hard time opening up about these things, especially when they're hurting themselves."
Layla sighed, feeling a pang of guilt. "I just thought he didn't want to be with me anymore."
"It's not your fault, Layla," Sarah reassured her. "But maybe now that you know, you can talk to Ashton. Maybe understanding what he's going through will help you both find some closure."
Layla nodded, her resolve hardening. "I need to talk to him. I need to hear his side of the story."
That evening, Layla gathered her courage and texted Ashton. "Can we talk? It's important."
To her surprise, Ashton replied almost immediately. "Sure. Meet me at the park?"
Layla agreed, her heart racing as she made her way to the park. When she arrived, Ashton was already there, sitting on a bench with his head bowed. He looked up when he saw her, and Layla's heart ached at the sight of him.
"Hey," Ashton greeted her quietly.
"Hey," Layla replied, sitting down beside him. "I heard about... everything."
Ashton sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I'm sorry, Layla. I wanted to tell you, but I didn't know how."
Layla took a deep breath, her voice gentle. "You don't have to apologize. I just wish you had let me in."
"I didn't want you to see me like that," Ashton admitted, his voice raw with emotion. "I thought I could handle it on my own."
Layla reached out, taking his hand in hers. "Ashton, you don't have to handle everything on your own. I care about you, and I want to be there for you."
Ashton looked at her, his eyes filled with tears. "I pushed you away because I didn't want to burden you. I didn't think I deserved your love."
Layla shook her head, her own tears falling freely. "Ashton, you deserve love and support just as much as anyone else. We all have our struggles, and it's okay to lean on others."
Ashton squeezed her hand, his grip tight. "I'm so sorry, Layla. For everything."
Layla leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to his cheek. "Let's take it one step at a time, okay? We can figure this out together."
Ashton nodded, a flicker of hope in his eyes. "I want to try, Layla. I want to be better."
Layla smiled, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. "Then let's start from here."
They sat there in the quiet of the park, their hands intertwined, sharing their fears and hopes for the future. Layla knew it wouldn't be easy, but she was willing to fight for Ashton and their relationship. They had both been through so much, but together, they could find healing and strength.
As the stars twinkled overhead, Layla and Ashton made a silent promise to each other. They would face their challenges head-on, supporting each other every step of the way. And as they walked home together, Layla felt a renewed sense of hope blossoming in her heart. Whatever the future held, she knew they would face it together.
