The departure gate buzzed with the restless energy of travelers rushing to catch flights. Layla stood among them, her heart torn between excitement for her new job in New York and the melancholy of leaving behind the town where she had rediscovered so much of herself.
She adjusted her carry-on bag, her mind racing with thoughts of the past few weeks—reconnecting with Tyler, dancing with Ashton, and rediscovering the place that had once been home. Yet, amidst the chaos of the airport, Layla couldn't shake the uncertainty that lingered in her heart.
Just as the boarding announcement echoed through the terminal, a familiar voice called out her name. "Layla!"
She turned to see Ashton hurrying towards her, his eyes filled with determination and something deeper—something she had yearned to see for so long.
"Ashton?" Layla's voice wavered, her heart pounding as he reached her side.
"I had to come," Ashton said breathlessly, catching his breath. "Layla, there's something I need to tell you."
Layla searched his eyes, seeing the sincerity and vulnerability that lay beneath his words. "What is it, Ashton?"
Ashton took a deep breath, his gaze never leaving hers. "I love you, Layla. I've loved you for so long, and I can't let you go again without telling you."
Layla felt her breath catch in her throat, emotions swirling within her. She had hoped for this moment, dreamed of hearing those words from him again. "Ashton, I..."
Before she could say another word, Ashton closed the distance between them, his hands gently cupping her face as he kissed her with a tenderness that spoke volumes. It was a kiss filled with all the words left unspoken, all the longing and hope that had built up between them over the years.
When they finally pulled apart, Ashton rested his forehead against hers, their breaths mingling in the quiet space between them. "Layla, please don't go without me. Stay. Let's figure this out together."
Layla closed her eyes, tears slipping down her cheeks as she nodded. "I love you too, Ashton. I never stopped."
Ashton's eyes shone with relief and joy. "Then stay with me, Layla. Let's start over, build something real this time."
Layla smiled through her tears, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. "Yes, Ashton. I want that too."
Hand in hand, they walked away from the departure gate, leaving behind the uncertainty of what might have been for the promise of what could be. As they disappeared into the crowd, Layla knew that this time, their love would be stronger, their journey together more meaningful, and their future brighter than ever before.
