Chapter 3

Destiny

Dr. Williams finally released me when all the tests were done, but a new journey was about to begin. Nurse Trudy told me that an important event was happening tonight at the pack I would meet her family there. I can't tell you how nervous I was about meeting them, what if they didn't like me? What if they deny me of being a part of their family? But why didn't Mom tell me about her family? Did they hate her or did she hate them? Nurse Trudy helped me pack the few things I bought while staying here and piled them up in the trunk of her car.

"Are you ready?", she asked putting on her seatbelt. I gave her a tight-lipped smile, lord knows I was more nervous than anything but I wouldn't see them until tonight so I should try to prepare myself.

"We should get you a new outfit while we're out."

"Do my clothes look bad?", I looked down at my clothes and smoothed them out, they were a little on the wrinkle side but it wasn't too noticeable  

"No, it's just too formal. We're going to a get-together, not a business meeting." She giggled. We pulled up to some nearby shops, I decided to go with a dress and platform shoes. I also bought a few hair products to freshen up my afro. When we were done, we got a snack that would hold us until tonight. When we arrived at her residence, there were people and children everywhere. Their homes were close but at a respectful distance, children ran around while some teens stood with their friends.

"This seems like a big happy family," I said making eye contact with a little girl as we drove past.

"We are." Trudy smiled. Soon we arrived at her home. It was a little big for one person, but as we got my things out, I could hear several footsteps running towards the car. I watched as two little boys pushed past me and into Trudy's arms, and a deep voice spoke behind me, startling me.

"Welcome home honey.", The man hugged Trudy tightly kissing her cheek. I looked away in jealousy, it must be nice to come home to this much love desperately waiting to embrace you.

"Uhh honey, boys, this is Destiny. She's my niece.", her husband's eyes widened in shock.

"This is-", Trudy nodded her head. He walked towards me gazing into my eyes.

"You look just like her."

"I'm getting that a lot.", I started to feel uncomfortable under his gaze.

"I'm Henry and these two are Harry and Charlie.", the boys waved shyly. I smiled at them with a little wave back.

"How long are you staying for?"

"Well, I am just here to meet the rest of the family and then I'll leave."

"You should stay a little longer, we'd love to show around. There is much to do here."

"Thanks but I have to get back home for work." He nodded in defeat.

"Well you should come to visit now and again, I'm sure the boys would love to get to know you.", I nodded.

"Let me help you with this, Trudy will show you where you'll be sleeping.", I followed close behind as they guided me inside the house. Surprisingly, the inside looked bigger than the outside and was decorated nicely to fit their aesthetic. It was bright with numerous windows and smooth, glossy wood floors. They led me up the stairs to a room at the end of the hall. The room had white walls and the same glossy wood floors with two windows and a small twin-sized bed. Henry sat my bad down by the closet door and stood behind Trudy.

"It isn't much, but I hope you like it."

"It's just right, thank you," Henry left the room.

"There is also a bathroom here and everything you need should be inside, but let me know if there is anything else you need."
