Churned

I blink, lifting my eyes to stare at the recognizable face of Mr.White, he looks the same as the first time I met him.
Flashback:
The man, Tom, offered to take us somewhere safe.
We were reluctant, but eventually accepted.
Honestly I don't understand why we did, not a smart move to just take the hand of a stranger.
But we were desperate, at least I was.

The rain pelleted roughly against us, the scent that emanated was close to the scar of death and soggy eggs.
We smelled rotten, I vividly remember.
"What are you kids doin' out here anyway?" Tom led us to wherever the destination was, Levi grasped onto my hand, glaring at Tom the entire way.
"Well..." I trailed, eyeing Levi for what to say,
Levi squeezed my hand once, his eyes colliding with mine.
"Got kicked out." Levi says instead,
"Oh...mind if I ask why?" Tom asked, for a moment too long we were quiet, unsure of how to explain.
I look at Levi again, tempted to speak just to fill the silence that now stood between all of us.
    "We're foster kids." Levi says,

"Oh! That's g- I mean not good, -but um," he pauses, "you know what? I'd like you guys to meet  someone that I'd like you two to talk to."

"Who?" Levi demands, his steps faltering.

His lack of steps causes me to slow down, why is he stopping?
I look back at him, confused with why he suddenly slowed down.
   "Levi-"
"His name is Mr. White," Tom looks back at us,
"I promise you, whatever messed up situation you guys are in...he can get you out of it."

His words are strong and clear, no sign of hidden lies.
My heart begins to thump, could he be an undercover cop? Patrolling for dirty kids who've been on the run?
We can't trust anyone, but I so badly want to.
I want to go home, see my sister and be in my bed.
"Okay, sure."
"No."
Levi and I both speak at the same time. I look at him, searching for the reason for his response.
This could be our chance to get off the streets what is he doing?

"Everything alright?.." Tom stops walking, turning back to look at us.
"We should go with him Levi." I say, furrowing my browse in confusion.
"No. We shouldn't, we shouldn't trust anyone Iris." He pulls on my hand,
I don't get it,
"Why not-"
"We don't know if he's-" he leans close to me, "A cop." He whispers.

He's right, but on another hand, what if he isn't?
"I don't mean to butt in, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, Mr.White can guarantee whatever it is you need." Tom intrudes,
Exactly why we should take his offer and see.

"Iris-" Levi starts,
"We should go," I urge, we are both tired of being out on the streets.
I turn to Tom,
"Just give us a moment."
I drag Levi to a nearby wall, breaking our hands apart to cross my arms over my chest.
"We can't trust him." Levi begins,
I huff, even at my young age I was over his uncertainty with everything.
"For once Levi, just go with the flow of things."

He takes his hands and places them on my shoulders, bending at the knee to glare into my eyes.
From this view I can really see him, the dark bags under his eyes, the paleness to his cheeks.
He looks tired, drained.
Those dark grey eyes hold specks of black, like a foggy mist full of dark stars.
In them I see the tired young boy he is, excluding the hard edge around his eyes, the natural glare they hold.
Why haven't I noticed?
The gears in my mind change, he's been so focused on protecting me, that he hasn't even bothered protecting himself.
Why haven't I pondered on how he felt? He murdered his own foster mother, someone who took care of him.

All for me.
My throat constricts, a pain hitting me in the deep of my chest.
I zone back into what he's been saying, those pale lips of his moving, but my ears can't fathom any sound.
"Levi.." I whisper, all of a sudden it's like the days have finally caught up to me.
Levi killed for me, he told me that he didn't mean to, but that it also had to be done.
Said he was gonna run away, to never come back, I couldn't let him leave alone, so I ran too.

I'm the reason we're in this situation, it's now my turn to get us out of it.

"Iris." His voice is gruff, a strain held in it that I don't recognize.
"Let me do this." I say, looking up into his jaded eyes.
"Do what? What are you talking about-"
"Get you out of this situation." I shrug off his hands, turning around to head back to Tom.
"Iris! What are you doing-"
I didn't listen to what Levi had to say, only continuing the short distance back to Tom. He patiently waited, distracting himself with the small pebbles that lay on the ground.

"Take me to him." I say, determination armored around me like I'm built for war, I don't know if Tom is a cop or not, but I won't want this opportunity to pass and Levi is stuck this way forever.
"Iris!" Levi comes up, and grasps my arm with a firm grip, I assume he plans to stop me.
But that won't happen.

"Let go!" I sneer, turning my head to glare at him.
"What are you doing?" He returns with just as much anger,
I have to do what I must.
If there's anything I've learnt from the system is that you always have to sacrifice for the ones you love.
"I'm doing what I should do, now either you come with me or you stay back and wait."
I leave no room for arguments, he doesn't seem to want any anyway.

"Iris you're being stupid, stop following him and come back."
"Stupid?" I hiss, "I'll show you stupid," I yank my arm out of his hand, speed walking ahead.
"For once will you just listen, you're not going with him."
He comes back up to me, but I keep right along.

"I will, and you can't stop me." I call back,
He halts like I slapped him, I can feel his stare, a burning sizzling into my backside.
"Whatever. Do what you want." He doesn't try to come up to me, doesn't try to stop me again.

I wish I could go back in time and never go through those glass doors, never speak to Mr.White and never offer myself to the devil himself.
But I did, I did it all for Levi, all of it.

I walked in determined, with my shoulders high and my chin pointed.
I meant business, I was going to make a deal, get Levi safe and sound and everything would be fine again.
Wrong.

The moment I saw Mr.white a cold shiver ran down my spine, that large belly of his protruded through his suit, that wispy white hair sprawled over his head.
A gleam flickered in his eyes the moment he saw me, a bright smile growing.
"Who is this?" He had asked,
"Her names Iris, she came along to talk with you."
"Is that so?" His gaze never left mine, the feelings that coursed through me were a mix of fear, determination, and regret.
I regretted leaving Levi, I was afraid of Mr.white, but I was determined to save Levi.
As he had done for me.

I swallow thickly, a trembling starting in my legs, then rose up to my arms and hands.
"Yes." I squeak.
"What about." He said vehemently, siting up in his large chair,
I glance at Tom, he throws me a gracious smile,
Do it Iris, I demand myself.

"Me and my friend are homeless and we need...I don't know, protection."
I don't know what to say without Levi, he's usually the one that answers these.
"From what?" He grins,
A nervousness pools in my stomach, like hot goopy oil, it boils down to my toes.
"The cops," an ache sits in my chest, did I say the wrong thing? Will he turn us in?
"Why?" He asks,

I fiddle with my fingers, nibbling on my lip when I begin to hesitate. Maybe Levi was right, this was a bad decision.
"It's alright my dear, no need to worry. Your secret is safe with me."
I don't see any lies, even his smile falls a little, an earnestness showing in his eyes.

Maybe he's safe,
So I tell him, I tell him everything, from the moment I seen Rachael beating Levi, to the second I blacked out, and so forth.
He raised a hand to rest against his chin, his eyebrows furrowed.
"And where is this..friend of your's." He asks,

"Stayed behind." I shiver, the truth gives many the power to hold one up on you, I gave him that power.
He's silent for a moment, his eyes trailing up and down my trembling form.

"I'll cut you a deal, but." He pauses, "There's something I'd like from you in return."
