Flashback:
"What is it?" I ask, glancing at Tom who seemed paler than before,
"That is, what are you willing to give?" He asks,
I furrow my brows, what does he mean?
What am I willing to give...for Levi?
Anything.
"Anything?" I say more like a question than an answer,
His eyebrows raise, a bright smile plastered to him.
An uneasiness settles in my belly,
Like I know something bad is coming, but how can I predict it?
"You work for me." He says,
Work for him?
That's easy, I can do a buster job, I used to do it for my old foster.
"Okay," I nod,
He shakes his head,
"I mean, work for me...permanently."
My jaw slackens, my heart dipping to my knee.
"Like..forever?" I ask, unsure of what permanently could mean.
He nods,
"I run an organization, where we train to build up the best agents in America" he pauses, scanning me over again.
"Crime has increased, trafficking has sky rocketed and we need qualified people to stop those high percentages."
Wait...so he wants me to fight?
"Like a fighter?" I ask,
"Exactly," he gleams,
"Can it guarantee Levi's safety?" I ask,
"I'll tell you what I can do,"
He then goes into the whole plan, he'll create a catalogue in the news that claims that Rachael was dealing with a bad dealer who she didn't pay back in time, so the crack dealer came for her and shot her dead.
Mr.White says that it happens all the time.
He then went into depth that he'll go to the police, pay them a lump sum of money to ignore the case entirely,
They'll do as he said, he promised.
He'll find Levi a permanent home, and everything will be fine.
The reason for Levi and I's disappearance was because of a trip our CPS worker's surprised us with, they tried to contact my parent but there was no response.
Which is likely because my foster dad doesn't give a hoot about me.
Gosh it all sounded too good to be true, so, I agreed.
"You work for me, you belong to me. Got it?" He had claimed.
I nod, eager now to get Levi out of this giant mess.
"Good."
"You train tomorrow, but for now...come to me."
My eyebrows rise, why?
Why should I go to him?
"What?" I ask, startled by the random demand.
"To sign the contact." He urged,
I let out a breath, laughing at myself, for a moment I thought he was going to do something.
I walk over, watching as he pulls out a sheet from his desk drawer.
"Sign here," he points to the bold line, I do as told, writing a sloppy print of my name.
"Wonderful." He grins, flipping the paper so it's facing him.
"So...what now?" I ask, I glance to where Tom stands, only to see he's gone now.
"There is one more request I have for you." He grins, a chilling grin that makes my arm hairs rise.
"That is?.." I nearly whisper, panic flaring in my gut my the desire I see shining in his eyes. The entire atmosphere shifts,
End of flashback:
I wish there was a Time Machine that could turn back time, I know I wish for it a lot, but there truly are many things I wish I could change,
That day alone would have been one of them,
He assaulted me that night, in a way that was hard to understand.
He asked me to...sit on his lap, I denied, he got angry, blah blah.
My distant stare hardens, the memory of that night unfolding in my mind.
He grabbed me, told me that I now was his, I scoff, thinking of my puny attempts of fighting him off, I fought like my life depended on it.
At the time I thought it did, in the shelters we were taught about sexual assault, told that if it happened we were to tell a trusted adult.
I was terrified of ever going through rape, terrified of being a victim.
My hands harden around the gun I hold.
Only thing is that I laid myself on that platter's and gave it to the pigs, my eyes were opened that day, even more from the trauma I already had from the foster system.
While it happened I got through it by chanting, this is all for you Levi.
I pleaded, I cried, but then I was silent.
No fight could stop this monster. I was forced to show up the next day, to train and go through the assault all over again and again.
If I didn't, Levi and I would be out to the nearest prison.
My life and Levi's were now his.
His deal was ensured, Levi did in fact get a nice home, all news catalogues forgot about the whole incident, we'd pass cops and they wouldn't even stop to spare us a glance.
But I was breaking,
Levi was irate with my decision, he never knew how I had got him out of the situation, only that I did.
I didn't have the heart to tell him,
He'd blame himself,
I couldn't risk him chipping away the way he did when he murdered Rachael again, not when he was starting to be happy.
That new family of his really was amazing.
I'd go to school, go home, then go to centenary, train and...see Mr.white. Go home and repeat.
That went on for a couple of years but I remember one specific day, I was in eighth grade, I held it all in, kept my shoulders high, until one day.
Levi asked me something that made me shatter.
I crumbled like a falling tower in front of him,
Flashback:
"What's gotten into you? Ever since...you know..you've been different." A harmless, useless question.
But it brought down my metal walls, exploded all defenses I had kept for moments like these.
I knew he'd notice my lethargic moods, my drained soulless eyes, I noticed them, I'm almost sure he did too.
I wish I had better preparation for this.
Tears sprawled from my eyes like a faucet, my body shaking with sobs.
"Iris.." he said, his words tangled with fear, he threw an arm over my shoulder, shifting to move a little closer.
We sat in a field of grass, the sun beaming on us.
The happy sun did nothing to brighten my gloomy mood.
"What's going on?" He shifted to kneel in front of me, sliding his hands over mine.
I sat helplessly hunched over, defeated and tired.
"I-.." I pause. what could I say? I could lie and say I'm still shook over the incident, but it was two years ago, and he seems over it.
I lifted my eyes to his, the memory of his face from that night in the rain where Tom found us played back in my head.
He was so broken.
Don't do this to him.
I sniffed,
"Just my period." I lie, I haven't had my period for three months, haven't been eating much either.
I assume it's just because of the cold I've had for about ninety days.
"It's not." He deadpans,
I muster up a grin, my cheeks stretching painfully to accommodate.
I don't smile often anymore,
"It is." I lie again,
He huffs, his eyes dancing over the features of my face.
"A period doesn't do this Iris Nevergreen...but I'll let you have it this time." He pulls me into a Hug, the smell of clove and sandalwood wafting through my nose.
He smells expensive now, his hair nicely groomed and clothes pristine and clean. Different to the small thin boy who lived with Rachael.
I smile genuinely now, glad that I could have given him this.
We break apart, continuing our conversations about whatever it is we think of.
That night I sneak out, needing to walk out my thoughts.
I wanted to die, almost needed it.
So, I walk to a nearby bridge, crawling over that edge, sitting on the rail to stable myself.
Levi's happy, Anna, my sister is happy, she's going to Harvard in a couple of weeks.
I'm only just beginning my freshman year of high school.
I've got so much more time left, Levi's moving on, gaining more and more friends.
And I'm..stuck.
Living a cycle I can't break.
No one seems to notice, do they care?
Was it worth it- no, don't go there Iris. You did it all for Levi, to see him fly, remember? all that just for me to crawl?
I shake my head, dragging a bony hand into my hair.
My body is so weak, the training I've been through has paid off though, at least i'm stronger now, full of small muscle.
The assault has eased, but still happens, guess I'm not as appealing as I was two years ago, not so chubby.
I stare down at the dark water wondering how deep I'll go before I touch the bottom or drown.
I blink up to the sky, staring at the amazing stars, some larger and brighter than the others,
I wonder if I'm the star that's dim and small, or am I the one that's not even seeable?
I huff, I just don't...understand.
You did this to yourself, something in my head says,
I agree, I did.
But...I huff, there's nothing I can say.
I blink back down to the water, the crescent moon reflecting on its bounty.
I want to die, but I don't want to be the one to kill.
Mr.White is training me to be Skilled, a killer, a weapon.
I don't want to be that, I want to be free.
End of flashback;
But a part of me gave up on that dream, I adapted what he wanted me to be entirely, grew and evolved into it.
I'm beyond his weapon, beyond his killer.
He's built me to be his, but I have turned it into my own pleasure.
I'm free, as free as Mr.white will ever let me be.
I still remember the day Levi joined centenary, he kind of just...appeared, I was training, and at this point we had more trainees.
And to my shock, Levi came through the doors, apparently Mr.White approached him, told him about my training for the organization and asked if he'd do him the honor of joining too.
Levi's always fancied the idea of action, so I guess I see why he could've joined.
But then again, I don't know why Levi agreed, I wish he hadn't.
But I couldn't help realizing how perfect he was for the job, he was more agile, efficient, intelligent.
He got the better life, which also meant more opportunities.
Mr. White quickly grew in fondness, he instantly trained him harder, pushed him to be faster, more more more.
Levi exceeded me quickly, but there was always something that he lacked strongly.
Obedience,
While I, always did.
levi didn't, If he was fed up, he was fed up.
There was no talking Levi into doing anything he didn't want to do, no blackmailing, no intimidating.
Levi was under Mr.Whites thumb, but then again wasn't.
I dreamed of being like that, to be able to say no.
But I wasn't, and couldn't.
I stare off, realizing how trapped I've been in my head.
Today is the day I will be free.
I become conscious of the cement walls that surround me, the alarm still barking, the red light still glowing.
Mr.White still stands there, staring at me with an unknown expression.
"Leave him behind Iris." He suddenly say's,
He's asking me to do the impossible,
"Or what." I spit, anger burning feverishly in my veins.
He looks taken aback by my attitude, but the trip down memory lane has scorched something in me, memories I kept away have now been unleashed.
I remember that little girl, that broken little girl that wanted death to meet her sooner than life would.
Hopeless, empty, chained.
I remember how I felt, the anger, the self loathing, self hatred. That portion of me has died, I guess I sort of forgot that traumatic bit of my life.
Not that I forgot, but tried to forget, I wanted to let go of that part of me and never-ever, touch it again.
But now it's here, fresh.
And I will avenge.
I begin to merge into my old self, the past almost becoming my present,
His eyebrows lower, a glare that I remember perfectly coming across his features.
"Or pay the price." He grits,
I swallow, a shred of me still terrified,
But I'm the one with the weapon, the one who will come out of here alive.
Can't say the same for old bones over there.
I lift the gun, aiming it at his fat heart.
"Iris." He clips, "you wouldn't shoot me."
"Why not?" I ask, squinting to look at my aim,
"All I've done." He scoffs,
"Is hurt me." I say, finger touching the trigger.
"No-...I helped you."
I bark out a bitter laugh,
"In what wor-"
The next moment I'm catapulted into the air, a loud explosion blowing up mere feet away from us,
We both go flying.
