There the old man stands with that old money crafted Cain in his hands. He leans his weight on it, glaring at me with those piercing blue eyes I've learned to hate and admire.
"M-Mr.White." I whisper, if there is anyone to bring me to my knees it is this man.
A short pudgy white haired man that could pause the world with his presence, and has the power to scare the living soul out of you.
"My dear," he clips,
The endearment causes a recoiling reaction to unfurl out of me, a deep desire to retch climbing up my throat.
I've hated the silly pet names he's used since the day he found Levi and I, he had always called us by those torturous nicknames.
For a moment I just stare, completely puzzled that he would be the one I'd see. I mean I guess I should have expected him, heck I wanted to see him, but actually seeing him in the flesh...alive and well.
It's shocking, and off putting.
It's been about four months since the accident, one reason why I haven't seen him for so long, and also the reason why his leg is the way it is now.
"What is all of this?" I say, after I've found my voice again.
He blinks, his gaze dipping down the length of my body. Suddenly I can feel my nakedness like a sneer of burning lava, it's blistering my skin and melting my bones.
I feel a great wave of...what is it? Shame? Vulnerability?
I'm not sure, but I want to take the clothes off the nearest dead guy and put them on before I let his eyes scan me like this again.
Me and Mr.White have a...unique relationship, peculiar in too many ways to be explainable.
"You betrayed me Iris, and now you must reap the cost for your actions folly."
My eyes widen at his words, is he serious? I stare longer to hope that glint of a lie could show.
"How did I betray you? I nev-"
"You did the moment you allowed yourself to be in the presence of an enemy to centenary, he's scum, a liability to all of us."
His words spark an anger in me, I can feel the snap of my breath being sucked in from shock.
How could he say such crude words? Levi carried this team on his back, if it weren't for him none of us would be here.
He was what I am now, the sacrifice.
"Don't say that." I grit, clenching my fists firmly.
"Why not. It's the truth isn't it?" He inhales, I glare at the man.
To think that I've given it all jus-
"My dear sweet flower," he tsk's, shaking his head as if there is some hidden secret about Levi that I don't know.
"There is so much that you don't know. So much pain," he lowers his gaze to the floor, biting down on his lower lip before casting his gaze back to mine.
"You will waste your time if you don't accept your punishment and never see Levi again."
My eyebrows furrow, anger and confusion are two strong emotions that should never mix.
"What are you talking about?" I hiss, growing irritated with this nonsense.
"Why is it such a big stinking deal that I went to see him? He isn't causing us any harm." I groan, bringing a hand to grip my hair.
"Because. Iris, he is a threat."
"A threat how?! He doesn't do anything but mind his business! He doesn't want anything to do with you or anyone that is involved in this organization."
I can't contain myself, yes I raise my voice, and yes that was a mistake.
I can see the gleam in his eyes, that dark place that he keeps hidden away from everyone but me showing.
Control yourself Iris.
He pauses a moment,
"If that were true, would he not want anything to do with you?"
I stiffen,
"Ye-" I pause, "Come on you know that's different. We have history, we're family. Plus I went five years without seeing him, is that not good enough?" I almost want to plead with him,
But there is nothing to plead for, because nothing. And I mean nothing, is going to keep me away from Levi.
"Getting rid of him completely is what will be good enough, why is it so difficult for you to do that?" He glares,
My jaw slackens, he's as hard headed as a bull.
"Maybe because he's important to me?" I grit,
"Why do you want him gone so badly, because all the way up until now you've never mentioned him once since he left."
"It would be days of us talking for you to finally understand. But for now, promise me with an oath, that you won't see him again."
I can't promise that,
"No." I say determined, "Seeing Levi should not be a crime, he's my family. The last of what I've got." I glare,
He takes three steps toward me,
"You have no family but us," he points a finger between the two of us,
"No-"
"Yes!" He takes another step toward me, that putrid glare heavy on his face.
"When you signed your life over to me you left all of that behind. Which includes Levi."
Mr heart stutters, the sound of it cracking like chips into my ears is similar to knocked over plastic pieces in a pokers game.
"That wasn't in the contract." I grit,
He smiles sadistic like,
"Oh..but it was,"
I start to panic, feeling like every wall around me is closing in on me.
"You're mine Iris Nevergreen, and if I forbid you of seeing that man, you will obey."
"I don't have to do anything I don't want to do." I seethe,
"You may have everyone else wrapped around your fat fingers, but I won't be anymore!"
Curse the day I signed my life to him, I did it out of fear and harsh circumstances, but Levi was also a huge part in the deal.
He grows red before my eyes, similar to a plump tomato, the kind that you know would be juicy and delicious.
Only he doesn't look juicy or delicious.
"Your greatest regret will be to choose that man over m-...I-I mean us."
My eyes widen, a creepy feeling crawling up my spine.
"So that's what this is about...you're jealous of me and Levi." I scoff,
I cannot believe this, like seriously, Mr.White has always shown himself to be composed and creepy, and jealous...But this?
It's all too new,
"I care for what belongs to me."
Mine. Mine. Mine.
All I am to him is an item, a wonderful piece of candy to use.
I'm not something to own, I'm a human being, I am free.
At least you want to be.
I shift the loaded gun, I'm actually surprised I haven't used it yet.
"Mr.White.." I intake a deep breath,
"I'm not yours, the deal was my skills for your protection. Nothing else."
He smiles, a crooked splitting smile that makes my skin tingle, in a bad way.
"That's what you were manipulated to think, but flower, trust me, there is always more to a two sided deal."
My jaw slackens,
"What are you talking about?"
