Simon spent the rest of the night watching over them both with a renewed desire to protect them at all costs. He was used to long days with little or no sleep, so was happy to sit and just observe. Occasionally he'd whisper to Emily about going home to play with her toys, read her books and show him her garden. The thoughts of the future becoming stronger, knowing that he would move heaven and earth to make that happen.
Georgia awoke early in the morning to her phone ringing. Gesturing to her bag, Simon pulled it out and took it to her. He couldn't help but feel the rush of positivity when he glanced at the phone, seeing her lock screen was the photo of him reading with Emily on the sofa, on her birthday. He was looking down at the time, so his face wasn't visible, making him feel instant relief.
Simon excused himself to get some hot drinks for them while Georgia took her call. Returning, she was back sitting at Emily's bedside "Everything okay?" he asked cautiously.
"Yeah, it was the base commander checking in with how Emily was doing" she explained as she gratefully sipped her coffee.
"They obviously value you for supporting you so much with Emily" Simon reasoned aloud.
"They've always been great. He's told me to take all the time I need and not to worry about coming back till Emily is well enough" she explained smiling.
The doctor soon arrived with the nurse, to check I on Emily. "We've stopped her sedative now, so it will take her a little while to come around again. Call us as soon as she shows signs of waking up" he requested before leaving them alone again.
Simon, wanting to help in any way he could suggested "You've been here for a week, do you need anything from home? Change of clothes, toiletries, anything Emily might need?" he offered.
"You don't have to do that Simon, you've come all this way" she reasoned.
"It's fine. I'm happy to help out. What do you need love?" he repeated with a soft insistence.
Georgia wrote down a list of things for Simon to get from the house. Simon was glad to be back in the home again, looking around and the familiar space, though eerily quiet without it's occupants. Memories of his previous visits played in his mind prompting him to smile and chuckle as he gathered toiletries and clothing. Seeing Emily's book on the night stand, he popped it into the bag and drove back.
He watched over Emily while Georgia went off to the bathroom to wash and change. "I brought your book sweetheart. When you wake up I'll read you a story" he whispered as he caressed her cheek.
Georgia looked a lot more relaxed and rested when she returned, so Simon headed off to freshen up and grab them some food. After eating, they sat in silence for a while, just watching Emily as she lay peacefully. Georgia noticed Simon fiddling with his phone "Everything okay Simon?" she asked worried that he would be leaving so soon.
"Need to call my captain at some point. I left in a bit of a hurry" he said frowning.
"Will you get in trouble for leaving to come here?" she asked worried about the implications of leaving his post.
"No, Price is a fair man. Just have a lot of explaining to do. He doesn't know anything about you or Emily, so he's probably wondering what the hell's going on" he said with a sigh.
"Do you know what you'll say to him?" she queried.
"Guess I'll have to tell him the truth. No-one knows much about me, not even my captain. But he's always respected that, but this he'll not be expecting" Simon said with a loud sigh.
