Janet

I stood there for a while, locked in a silent standoff as Clinton scrutinized me with an intensity that made me squirm.

Finally, he broke the silence, his voice laced with a hint of amusement.

"Class A and I'm sure you're thinking you've resumed late, which of course, you have." He nodded at me, his eyes sparking with a knowing glint.

"How late?" I raised my eyebrows, my curiosity piqued, and my hopes rising that I'd missed a significant chunk of time.

"A week," Clinton replied, with a quirky raise of his eyebrows. "But don't worry, nothing earth-shattering happened. Just the usual drudgery."

"That's relieving to know," I said, forcing a smile, trying to hide my embarrassment.

But Clinton just chuckled and said, "Class A is actually the other way around, and not here." he beamed with amusement, clearly enjoying my mistake.

"Gosh, my bad! lead the way then," I replied, gesturing for him to show me the direction.

As we walked together, I couldn't help but think, Is this handsome guy not looking a bit weird, or is it just my imagination? but I pushed the thought aside, and focused on finding a familiar face In the crowd. That's when I spotted Alexa, chatting with someone I didn't recognize.

She wore baggy jeans and a matching top, paired with sleek sneakers. Her dark hair, and almond shaped eyes stood out, and her thin, pinkish lips curled into a friendly smile.

I turned to Clinton and said, "I think I'll grab a vacant seat over there. I see a friend of mine. Thanks for your help, by the way."

He nodded and pointed to a group of students saying, "I'll catch up with my friends over there. Catch you later, pretty J," he winked before leaving, and I couldn't help but think, pretty J, not bad at all.

With a smile, I made my way over to Alexa and covered her eyes with my hands, playfully interrupting her conversation.

Alexa felt my hands covering her eyes and screamed, "Oh my god, tell me it's not who I think it is!" she exclaimed excitedly, recognizing the texture of my hands.

I tried to disguise my voice, replying in a hoarse voice, "Of course not, how can that be possible?" but Alexa wasn't fooled.

"Great voice you've got there, don't try to fool me Janet! I know it's you," she chuckled, and I couldn't help but laugh too.

"Alright, alright, I can't really trick you, can I?" revealing my true voice.

I released my hands from Alexa's eyes, and she turned around, giving me a huge hug. Good heavens, that was a bit tight, I thought, relieved when we finally released each other.

"Janet, good God, I've missed you so much!" Alexa exclaimed. Her expression turned curious. "Why did you resume late," she asked, playfully hitting my head.

"Ouch that hurt!" I replied, rubbing my head, and giving her a mock sad look.

"I'm sorry, now answer," Alexa said, her voice firm, while stomping her feet on the cold floor. I was taken aback by her sudden seriousness. I thought to myself, This is going to be damn wild, I hesitated, wondering what I'd missed during my absence, did anything interesting happen in school while I wasn't here? I thought, hoping for a clue.

"No reason at all," I finally replied, shrugging my shoulders. Alexa expression turned playful, and we both burst into laugher, chatting and joking like no time had passed between us. But our carefree moment was interrupted by a sudden. "Cough, cough," from behind us.
