The sun setting over the ocean from the window is a breathtaking sight. When Dallas asks if I want to take a stroll along the shore to watch the sky change colors, I eagerly accept.
The air is much cooler as the sun fades, the sand soft beneath my feet as we walk. Despite Dallas at my side, I can't seem to focus on the scenery, lost in thought.
I feel as if I've been distracted all evening, unable to stop recalling my earlier conversation with Carmen. It seems as if I've been debating with myself for hours, unable to decide if telling Dallas the truth is the best decision.
The roar of the waves breaking echoes in the stillness between us. Reflections of the orange and pink sky dance across the waves. Standing next to Dallas, taking in the view, I'm left breathless.
"It's pretty," I whisper. "Watching the light against the water."
"Yeah," Dallas agrees. "It is."
She clears her throat before changing the subject. "Can you believe it's our last night?"
Dallas's stare bores holes into my face, but I keep my eyes trained on the water, unable to face her as I admit, "I'm not sure I'm ready to go back to Sunset."
"I'm not ready either," Dallas agrees.
An odd feeling washes over me. Turning away from the ocean, my stare meets Dallas's. Holding my breath, I don't argue as she takes a step closer.
Wordlessly, her eyes search mine. Electricity sparks the air between us, leaving me scared to move out of fear of getting shocked.
"You look really beautiful," Dallas says. She speaks so softly, I almost think I imagined the words. "The lights hit you and you just . . . glow."
Opening my mouth to respond, I realize I don't know what to say. Heart pounding, I swallow Dallas's words. I've been complimented before, but never in a way that means so much.
"You do too," I say without thinking. "You're really pretty, Dallas."
My cheeks warm as the words hit the air, but I don't take them back. I meant what I said. I think back to what Carmen said earlier on the beach.
You don't see the way she looks at you.
Dallas's face flushes. I angle my body toward hers, and Dallas mirrors the stance. As another gust of wind blows, she reaches forward to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear.
Her touch lingers against my cheek. She looks at me like she wants to kiss me.
What's scarier than noticing this is knowing how badly I want her to.
"I'm really glad you came with us," Dallas says. "I mean, it's been nice . . . having you here."
My cheek leans into her touch. Holding her stare, my breath catches.
"You don't mean that."
Dallas takes a step closer, killing the space between us. Sparks and warmth hit me.
"I don't know what I was expecting, having you here," she says. "But it's been . . . sort of nice. You never fail to surprise me."
"In a good way or a bad way?"
Dallas smiles at the question. Taking one last step forward, she closes the gap separating us entirely.
"In a good way," she admits.
"You surprise me too," I whisper. "I never thought . . ."
Trailing off, I can't allow myself to finish the sentence. When we started this thing, we set rules. We put boundaries in place. I haven't uttered a word about my feelings to Dallas since they started forming.
