Mike started going off in some random direction, and Will followed him. It seemed to Will as if he misjudged when nightfall would set, as the sky was dark. But maybe that was due to the enormous, looming clouds overhead. It seemed like a downpour would occur soon.
"Hey, slow down." Will said, as Mike speedwalked. "Why are you walking so fast?"
"We gotta find someone." Mike muttered. "We can't just keep hoping the crew finds us. If we sit around any longer, nothing will happen. I'm taking action, and I'm taking it now." He said louder, refusing to slow down. His stomach squeezed, but he persevered, even though he was on edge, nervous about all the possibilities. Will struggled to keep up with his stride. They were walking on a narrow sidewalk, alongside a forest, and the leaves on the trees rustled from the wind. Hums of thunder erupted from the large, dark storm clouds. Will gulped nervously.
"Maybe this is a bad idea. Do you want to head back?"
"No." Mike said. "We're finding the others. I'm tired of being helpless."
A few drops of rain started to drop, a light sprinkle.
Will reluctantly continued to follow Mike, as the rain gradually continued to increase in intensity.
.
At this point, the rain was at a steady downpour, beginning to soak the boys.
"C'mon Mike..." Will tugged at the sleeve of Mike's jacket, and pulling his arm.
"Just put your hood on." Mike said.
"It's not safe here. A storm is gonna start soon." Will said, pulling his soaked hood over his already wet hair.
"I know. But we're already far from the town. I doubt we'll find any quick shelter. What's a little rain gonna do to us?"
Will huffed as he hurried with Mike, down the sidewalk, their steps being muffled by the intensity of the rainfall, as it continued to pelt the ground harder and harder.
.
.
.
A lightning bolt struck the sky brightly, bringing the roar of thunder with it.
Mike's hands and Will's hands were both stuffed deep in their pockets, so Mike linked his elbow around Will, as they continued to pace forward, barely able to see much farther in front of them, the rain crashing down ruthlessly.
A high pitched shriek came nearby from in the forest, followed by "HELP!"
Mike came to a halt immediately. "Did you hear that?" Mike spoke up, but it seemed like a whisper against the roars of the thunder. Will nodded in response.
Mike unlinked with Will, and carefully stepped over a bush, heading into the forest. Will hesitated to follow Mike, but he had no other choice, as being caught in the eye of the storm was a perfect opportunity for him to be swept away and lost.
In the forest, their visibility was decreased even further. Trees covering pretty much the whole sky overhead, but rain still managed to hammer them through the leaves. Their vision was clouded in mist and darkness, as nightfall drew near. The air was thick with the scent of wet grass and rainwater.
Will was worried about Mike. He knew that Mike wasn't the type to just go out and put both of their lives on the line out in this storm for no reason; he wasn't exactly sure why Mike was doing this all. He knew that no matter what happened, he would be by Mike's side, even if the worst were to happen.
Mike however, regret being so high-strung. Here in the storm, he was putting Will in danger by bringing him out in this lightning storm. His heart pounded as he dragged the entirety of his soaked body through the grass, searching. He huffed as he continued, holding Will tightly, making sure he was right behind him. No matter what happened, even if they encountered a monster, Mike knew it was his duty to protect Will. So much has changed in the past month, he knew he wasn't his old self. But he knew that he would always protect Will, even if he didn't think about it. Finding Will was the most important thing to him those few years ago. Now he's channeling that same energy to find the crew, for the benefit of Will, and himself. He felt guilty for all of this, for not being able to find the crew for so long. He wanted to make it up to Will, no matter the danger.
Mike knew that whoever was in the forest needed help. He wasn't just going to hear someone scream and not do anything about it.
Through the rain, he heard footsteps near. "HEY!" He shouted. "Who are you?!" He said, speeding up his pace as he went deeper into the forest.
A guy's shallow breathing approached the boys closer and closer.
"First of all, who are YOU?" Said the guy, appearing from behind a tree, to show himself in front of Mike and Will.
Lucas.
Their hearts both dropped in their chest.
"LUCAS?!" They both said in unison.
"Hollup, hollup, YOU GUYS?! WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?!" Lucas exclaimed.
"That's what we're trying to ask you!" Will said.
"Yeah, what the fuck are you doing here, in the middle of this forest? Were you the one that screamed?" Mike asked.
"Yeah..." Lucas admitted embarrassedly. "It doesn't matter why I was here. But I thought I saw something... something strange." Lucas spoke, with a hint of fear in his voice. "It doesn't matter anymore. We needa get back."
So many questions ran through the minds of Mike, Will and Lucas. But they didn't have much time to ask anything, lightning could strike them at any moment. And they were all throughly soaked in the freezing rainwater, shivering.
Through the grass with their soaked sneakers, the boys hightailled it out of there, following Lucas, trusting where he was leading them to. Mike and Will hoped deep down that Lucas knew where the rest of the crew was, and he wasn't just alone. They ran as fast as they could, as the rumbling of thunder continued to threaten them.
Soon, Will and Mike could make out what seemed to be an abandoned cabin, as they continued to head in its direction.
