Lou arrives home and sees Sam hugging their maid Merlo which is sobbing in her shoulder. "You didn't tell me that Enna had passed." (Their last maid) Sam reproaches him when she sees him. He still can believe she is there; lots of luggage being carried upstairs by the gardener.
"You didn't tell me anything actually; I mean, the balcony in my bedroom??? I love it!!! Thank you" he hasn't said a word cause, she? Here? Back? To his -their- house? Just like that? At least she is happy, she looks happy and smiles, and most important of all, she talks to him, doesn't ignore him.
"Welcome back." It's all he gets to tell her after following her through the house while she looks for all the changes he has made through the years.
"Thanks." She says sympathetically "Now back to the real life and work your ass off." She talks with a hard accent that he immediately feels fond of. A mix between her old one and fast as the Asiatic people she was surrounded for five years and deep as the Russians, that he knows she has been visiting constantly. He has no idea. But he likes it.
She is so different and so the same at the same time; the same Sam he met and fall in love with. Now he kinda understands better why she hated him; this was her plan of life, to study, to graduate and work in what she likes the most. -"not to wait... it's what you did wrong."- he remembers those words she told him 2 days before leaving this same house.
The days pass and she doesn't try to avoid him, they are not friends, more like two roommates sharing a house; each doing their day to day in their own ways. She sets up one of the free rooms as her office, or more like a lab. They go to work separately, in different schedules, different cars.
Lou finds out that she in her white medical coat is a sin to the eyes; she looks professional and hot and smart and yeah, hot. They go to dinners or meetings that the other invites. But their interactions are always easy, formal and simple; there is no need to make shows or fake smiles; they are themselves and period.
To Lou's disdain she had to arrive wearing her high heels, a pencil skirt, her reading glasses and of course the white coat that evening that she found THEM. "Sam... hi, erm... this is Cat, my..." he looks at his friend? and frowns. Sam watches them both, their lips red and checks flushed, sees -Cat- taking Lou's hand and say "we are together" all while watching Lou's profile with heart eyes instead of looking at her.
She feels like something inside her is wrong. "Ok, have a good evening." Sam says in a cold voice while walks past them in direction to the stairs. The sounds from the wheels of her luggage and clicks of her heels are defeating.
Lou comes out of his trance when a door from upstairs bangs and Cat pulls his hand in direction of the front door. Ok, he thinks to himself, that wasn't jealousy what he saw in Sam's reaction, he tries to convince himself, no, it couldn't be that.
Sam has years without touching Lou's money, years!!! She started a job inside the laboratory of the campus while still studying. So that way she never again needed his financial support. It's not like he kept tracking of how she used their money; it was his accountant that kept him informed that she hadn't use his money once she had settled in Taiwan.
Two years before her graduation she had come to join him to an important event of the parliament in London; she came looking gorgeous as always but her hair was extremely short and even when she could pull any haircut; that look made her neck look long and delicious, but still, Lou missed her long, brown curls. It was short as Miley Cyrus in that breaking ball music video. But he could hear the story behind that short haircut while she shared it with the other people in their table.
"I was in Sri Lanka; the health department is so poor in there, there are lots of deceases, everywhere is dirty and the weather is hot, the perfect environment for virus and bacteria to grow; they need sponsors or international organizations that donate vaccines, medicine, education, food, even water, let's not talk about the water system in there. I had a plague of lice living in me head for days. It was until we were about to leave, that my colleagues for health reasons had to cut my hair from the roots, it was incredible to watch how many bugs were eating me.
