December 23rd, 2006, 2:30 AM. I don't know how this happened. I'm here, in my bed. Laying next to Kris in a comfortable silence. Her small frame against mine, bringing warmth and comfort as our backs touched.
December 22nd, 2006, 11:30 PM. It was the same as always. One amazing gift from my mother and a homemade cake with us two alone. It was peaceful and quiet.
Until a few knocks appeared on the front door. It wasn't Ben's. Probably sulking because he ruined my birthday dinner.
I had gotten up to see who it was, my mother gently removing the blown out candles on the cake. The door creaked open once I opened the door.
I see Kris and her soft smile. It always brung flutters in my stomach, making my heart skip a beat. I loved the way her eyes sparkled when she smiled. The way her dimples seem to show when she does, the way her eyes stared into mine with every second. I loved the beauty in her face.
"Hi, Matthew." She spoke softly.
"Happy Birthday." She smiled warmly as she held up a neatly wrapped gift.
It was blue with a white glitter ribbon wrapped around the small box.
I hesitantly took it.
"Thank you," I murmured as I stared at the box.
I allowed her to come inside, pushing the door a bit more open for her to step inside.
As she sits down on the couch looking around, I speak up.
"Any reason for the visit?" I asked, giving her a plate of cake, despite her not asking for any.
"Well, it's your birthday, and I had already planned on getting you a present before the whole... family dinner thing." She murmured the last part.
"Sorry, by the way." she apologized, looking at me with her nomads shining under the lights in the living room, making them look more beautiful.
I shrugged it off.
"It's okay. There was no way you would've known."After that, we had a lot of fun. We told stories, laughed, watched movies, and told each other our interests.
I'll admit, I missed Ben's annoying presence but at the same time, it was nice.
By the time we stopped, it was already 1:45 AM.
She looked at her phone, seeing the time and sighing.
"It's too late for my mother to pick me up." She murmured as her mind started thinking about what to do.
My mother was working the night shift at the hospital, so her taking Kris home is not an option... And I haven't got a chance to take a driving test, so driving her home is also not an option...
Don't give me that look, it's been a busy... Life.
Hesitantly, I sigh and speak up.
"I mean.. You could sleep here until the morning." I murmured.
Her eyes widened. She was hesitant, thinking it through until I spoke again.
"You can sleep in my bed, and I'll... sleep on the couch." I murmured as I ran a hand through my messy hair.
She hesitated again, but I insisted gently.
"A..Alright but.. I can't let you sleep on the couch in your own home.."
We bickered about where to sleep, so that's how we ended up here.
