Evie sat at her desk blankly staring at her curtain covered windows. Alone in her thoughts, she was starting to drive herself crazy. The time was nearly 2 in the morning. The blondie had gone the rest of the previous day locked in her room ignoring everyone and everything.

Mateo brought her dinner and refused to leave until he saw she finished her food. Reluctantly, he left her alone the rest of the night. He sent a good night text that Evie only opened but didn't respond. It was tearing apart the poor boy. He gave her space like she requested, but all he wanted to do was comfort her.

In the silence of the night, Evie was drowning in her thoughts. She pulled the piece of paper with her sister's phone number from her pocket and stared at it, her heart pounding. After staring at it for what felt like hours, Evie pocketed the paper again.

Deciding she needed fresh air to clear her head, she put on her high-top Converse, and one of Mateo's hoodies, grabbed her phone, and opened her window. Quietly, she snuck out of the window, leaving it cracked so she could return through it later.

Evie sat on the wall next to her window, staring down at the ground. After blankly staring at the ground, she decided it wasn't doing her any justice. She walked on the side of the building over to where her boyfriend's room was. She briefly looked between his curtains to see him asleep, the soft rise and fall of his chest visible even in the dim light.

Evie continued walking on the building, her steps light and careful so she didn't wake anyone. She headed towards the base's garden surrounded by forest trees. The night air was cool and crisp, and the silence was both comforting and eerie.

The sounds of nature began to soothe her racing thoughts. Crickets chirped, leaves rustled in the breeze, and the distant hoot of an owl echoed through the trees. Evie took a deep breath, trying to find some clarity.

She reached a bench by the small creek that ran through the trees just past the garden Skye took good care of, and sat down, pulling her knees up to her chest and hugging them tightly. The piece of paper with her sister's phone number felt heavy in her pocket, a constant reminder of the unknown waiting for her.

Meanwhile, back at the base, Mateo tossed and turned in his bed. His worry for Evie had kept him up despite his best efforts to rest. He decided to go check on her. His soft knocks on her door went unanswered so the boy decided to use the spare key given to him. Upon entering, he noticed she wasn't in her room. When he noticed her window was open and her room empty, his heart skipped a beat. He knew Evie needed her space, but he couldn't shake the feeling that she might need someone right now, even if she didn't realize it. He hoped she hadn't run away. Panicked, he quickly woke up his buddies in his room and they all looked around base for her.

After briefly looking through the kitchen, the living room, and the meeting room, he decided she definitely went out for some fresh air. He quickly went back to his room and threw on his shoes and jacket, and grabbed a flashlight before heading out. His buddies tagged along. They were too worried about their 'mom' to say in Mateo's room like he suggested.

Mateo, although panicked, tried to think logically of where she would have gone. He determined he would check the garden and then the bench by the creek. He briefly reminisced on the memory of them moving the bench by the creek. It was back before she could go on missions and the two explored the area surrounding the base together while talking about random things.

He followed the familiar route, his flashlight cutting through the darkness. The cool night air and the rustling leaves were the only sounds that accompanied him. As he approached the creek, he saw her sitting on the bench, looking lost in thought.
