Race Day

Sunday was finally here, and after a quick message thread with Jack, he ended up cancelling and saying we would reschedule due to a conflict in his schedule. My day was a lot less stressful after that, and I could focus on Oscar qualifying well for his home race. The pace of the McLarens has been good all weekend, and even though I have been here supporting Oscar, I can't help but check up on Landos times too.

Oscar originally qualified 6th and was off Max's pole-position time by 6 tenths of a second. Checo had a penalty, which dropped him below Oscar, and promoted him to 5th. Lando would start P3 after Checo's penalty. The celebrations weren't far off, once he collected a bag of points on race day, we were all going out to party (as planned by Aurora, Oscar would've rathered to have a night in, but she insisted that he had to).

Oscar had organised a driver to give us a lift there, which Oscar usually prefers on a Sunday so he can focus and not worry about driving off the track. Walking in was a breeze since we got there so early, even before the allocated paddock times had started, so Aurora and I were able to get a coffee and a pastry without the media or fans swarming us. We were both wearing signed McLaren caps after we forced Oscar to sign it, which he thought was weird but we thought it was hilarious. We stayed hanging around the hospitality and bumped into Daniel, who was as excited as ever to see us in the paddock again, before rushing off for the Driver's parade.

We watched the parade from the TVs in the hospitality, and mentally noting everything the drivers were saying, Aurora sometimes nudging me when the interviewer asked a question to the driver that they've asked a million times before. 'Will you make the podium today?' they'll ask, with the driver starting P8, 'what do you think about this circuit?' boring, next. After Aurora and I scrolled through gossip accounts and laughed hard at the crazy rumours spread and posts about the Melbourne weekend so far, we headed over to the garage around quarter to 2 pm to talk to Emma and get ready for the race.

"Stop it!" Emma squeals before heading straight towards us for a hug, "you girls look gorgeous. Where do you want to be today?"

"The garage, I. am. so. excited!" I giggle at my best friend, she was such a cutie when she got excited about these things.

Emma told us to be back by 2:50 pm before the race started but after the Grid Walk and National anthem.

I let Aurora know about my whereabouts, and she told me to meet her on the grid. I rush over to Oscar's driver's room, knowing that he's most likely freaking out about performing in front of his home crowd, or he's lost something. More than likely, it's the latter. Once I reach his door, I knock, but the door just creaks open with no one inside. Lando's driver's room is just to the right of Oscar's, and the light is on indicating that someone's in there. Calming myself down, I go over to knock on Lando's door.
