The day after our unsettling discovery about the prophecy, I woke up with a sense of foreboding. Clara was already gone, leaving a note saying she'd be back late. I forced myself to get ready for work at the library, reminding myself to act as normal as possible around Ms. Rossi. If she was truly dangerous, any hint of suspicion from me could be disastrous.
As I left the apartment, Dair called. "Kal, be careful today. We still don't know what Ms. Rossi is capable of."
"I will, Dair. Max and I are meeting up later. I'll thinking to tell him everything. I will talk to him in and see if he can help," I replied, trying to sound more confident than I felt.
" Are you sure it is okay to tell him?" He sounded concerned
" He is really a good friend of mine, Dair. I got him when I was struggling the most with my life. He helped me even before Clara. I can't ghost him around, he deserve to know everything too." I assured him.
"Okay if you say so, Take care.."
I nodded but realised I was on the phone call and he can't see me.
" I will. " I replied and the call ended. The library was quiet when I arrived, the usual serene atmosphere now feeling heavy with tension. Ms. Rossi greeted me with her customary warm smile, but I couldn't help but feel a chill as I returned the greeting.
"Good morning, Amber. How are you today?" she asked, her tone as pleasant as ever.
"Morning, Ms. Rossi. I'm good, thanks," I said, forcing a smile. "Just a bit tired from studying."
"Well, if you need a break, just let me know," she offered kindly.
I thanked her and went about my tasks, my mind racing with thoughts of the prophecy and the hidden dangers. Every time Ms. Rossi walked by, I felt a knot of tension tighten in my stomach.
Around noon, I took my lunch break and met up with Max at our favorite café nearby. He noticed my anxious demeanor immediately.
"Amber, what's going on? You look stressed," he said, concern evident in his eyes.
I glanced around to make sure no one was listening before leaning in. "Max, there's something serious I need to tell you. But you have to promise to keep it between us."
His expression grew serious. "Of course, Amber. You can trust me."
I quickly explained the basics: the discovery of Clara's secret, the prophecy, and our suspicion about Ms. Rossi. Max listened intently, his face growing more concerned with each word.
