As I arrived at the library, with my purse in hand, I strolled towards the entrance, anticipation tingling in my veins. The library was my sanctuary, a realm where words danced off pages and stories whispered secrets.The door creaked open, releasing a burst of that familiar, comforting scent—a blend of aged paper and ink that never failed to stir my soul. I savored it for a moment before stepping inside.
"Amber, you're late again," Ms. Rossi's gentle reprimand greeted me.
"I apologize sincerely Ms. Rossi. It won't become a habit," I promised with a contrite smile.
Ms. Rossi, the enigmatic owner of the library, nodded with understanding, her eyes twinkling beneath strands of light crimson hair.
As I settled at my desk, the rhythmic tap-tap of keys on my keyboard filled the air, accompanied by the occasional rustle of pages as patrons sought their literary companions.
The clock struck 7 p.m., and I imagined the warmth of a long, relaxing shower awaiting me at home. "Excuse me," his voice, deep and resonant, broke through my reverie.
Flustered, I blinked and straightened in my chair. "I beg your pardon; I was momentarily lost in thought."
He offered a small, understanding smile before gesturing to the blue coloured book in his hands. "I was hoping to borrow this."
I explained the library's policy, regretting the inconvenience. "To borrow books, you'll need a library card, which requires a valid ID and proof of address. Unfortunately, we're about to close, so the process would take time."
His expression softened, tinged with disappointment. "Is there any way to expedite the process? It's quite urgent."
"I'm truly sorry," I replied, empathizing with his plight. "Perhaps you could return tomorrow?"
Reluctantly, he agreed and left, leaving a trail of curiosity in his wake.
As I tidied up, my mind went over to the book he wanted to borrow. Out of curiosity, I extended my hand towards that book which he left on my desk. But I frowned upon seeing the name of the book - 'The Interpretation Of Dreams'Edited;
