Rose had just come out of the bath. She was drying her hair with a hairdryer. She heard the bell ring "who is now?" She quickly put down the hairdryer and brushed her hair. She opened the door and hurried down the stairs to see who had come.

Rose stopped mid-step, her eyes widening in surprise. "Ray?" Her voice trembled slightly, a mix of disbelief and joy. She hurried down the remaining steps, her excitement evident in her every move.

"Hey, little sis," Ray called up to her, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "Miss me?"

Rose reached the bottom of the stairs and ran into his arms, hugging him tightly. "You have no idea," she whispered, her voice muffled against his chest.

But it was all Ray's imagination because reality was something different. When Rose came downstairs and saw her brother back from abroad, she squint her eyes making sure its her brother when she acknowledged him, she ran towards him and gave him a smack on the head. "Why did you lie!" she yelled, hitting him in the arm.

Ow!" Ray feigned hurt, rubbing his arm dramatically. "Hey, it was supposed to be a surprise! Can't blame a guy for trying to keep you on your toes."

"Surprise me? By giving me a heart attack?" Rose glared at him, though her eyes were already softening. "You know how frustrated I became? That I have to wait a month again?! I was tired of waiting". She hit him again on the shoulder . Her lower lip trembled a little bit and a sob escaped from her lips. "You don't know how I felt when you said you weren't...coming?"

Ray's grin faded, "Hey, I'm sorry, Rose. I just wanted to see that look on your face when you saw me. It was worth it, huh?"

She sniffled, trying to hold back tears. "You're such a jerk, you know that?"

He chuckled, pulling her into a warm hug. "Yeah, but I'm your favourite jerk. Come on, don't cry. I'm here now, and I'm not going anywhere". Rose sniffled, burying her face in his chest. "You better make it up to me," she teased lightly, her voice muffled against his shirt.

Ray chuckled, gently brushing a tear from her cheek. "Of course, sis".

They stood in the hallway, wrapped in each other's embrace, the weight of their separation lifting with each moment. Ray knew he had to make it right with Rose, not just with words but with actions.

"Alright, enough sappiness," Rose declared, pulling back from the hug with a playful glint in her eyes. "You owe me ice cream for this."

Ray grinned, ruffling her hair affectionately. "Ice cream it is, but only if you promise not to hit me again."

"You better not. Next time, no surprises like that, okay?"

"Deal," Ray said, patting her back. "No more tricks. Except maybe one or two small ones."

Rose laughed through her tears, pulling back to playfully punch his arm. "You better watch it, or I'll make you regret it."

Ray winked at her. "Oh, I'm shaking in my boots. Come on, let's go inside. I've got stories to tell."

Ray is still holding her at arm's length to get a better look at her. "Whoa, Rose! When did you get so tall? Did you hit a growth spurt while I was gone?"
