The door swings open, and my heart leaps into my throat. But then I see Max, my closest ally, standing in the doorway.
Relief floods through me as I recognize his familiar silhouette. His eyes, always so keen, meet mine with an understanding look.
"Max," I whisper, barely able to contain the wave of emotions crashing over me. "Thank God, it's you."
He steps forward, the dim light casting his face in sharp relief. "We don't have much time," he says, urgency lacing his voice. "The watchers are close, but I've found a way out."
I nod, gathering my resolve. With Max here, I feel a glimmer of hope. Whatever comes next, I know we can face it together.
I stand over Sam, gasping for breath. He's unconscious but still dangerous. The tape and rope I've found will have to do for now.
My hands shake as I start to bind him, my mind reeling from the sudden, overwhelming cascade of emotions.
Max steps forward, his movements sharp and pained. As he kneels beside me to help, I catch sight of blood seeping through his clothes, mingling with the grime of a hard-fought escape.
His face, usually so composed, is marred by fresh cuts and bruises, and a haunted look fills his eyes.
"Max, what happened?" I ask, the words rushing out before I can stop them. "How did you get away from the creature? How did you find me here?"
He grimaces as he tightens the rope around Sam's wrists. "It wasn't easy," he replies, his voice strained.
"That thing-it's relentless. But it's also predictable in its own way. I managed to lure it into a trap, buy myself some time."
I glance at him, searching his face for more, but he keeps his eyes focused on Sam.
"And finding you... I just followed the signs. The trails they left behind are faint, but they're there if you know where to look. I knew you'd be somewhere nearby, keeping to the shadows."
A rush of relief mingles with guilt. While I've been hiding, Max has been out there fighting, enduring who knows what to get to me.
I tighten the last knot on Sam's bindings, my fingers trembling slightly. "What about the paper?" I ask. "The note we found... Can we trust it?"
Max's face darkens. "That's a tricky question," he says. "The paper-it's a double-edged sword. It led me to you, yes, but it's also a tool the watchers could use against us. We have to be careful. There's a reason they left it where we could find it."
My thoughts whirl, and I force myself to focus. "So, what now? Do we just keep running?"
"For now, we need to regroup," Max says, casting a wary glance toward the door. "We can't stay here. It's only a matter of time before the watchers track us down again. But we need to get you somewhere safe first, patch up my wounds, and figure out our next move."
I nod, but a thousand questions claw at my mind. "Max... how did you know I'd be here? Why didn't you just run for safety?"
He hesitates, then finally meets my gaze. "Because you're my friend. I couldn't leave you behind. And... there's more to all this than just survival. We have to find out what the watchers want and why they're after us. We can't do that if we're always on the run, always separated."
His words hit me harder than I expected. In the chaos, I'd almost forgotten what it felt like to have someone to rely on, someone who cares enough to risk everything.
I take a deep breath, letting it out slowly. "Okay," I say, determination hardening my voice. "We do this together. We find out the truth, and we fight back."
