The faint creak echoes through the apartment, snapping me out of my daze. My heart leaps into my throat as I realize I’m not alone.

I have to act quickly. Clutching the piece of paper tightly, I glance around the room, searching for a place to hide.

Panic sharpens my senses, every sound amplified in the silence.

Footsteps. Slow, deliberate. Someone is inside, moving closer. I scan the office, my eyes landing on the narrow door at the back corner, leading up to the rooftop.

It’s an old, forgotten access point I used only once to check a leak that caused water stains on my ceiling.

My hands tremble as I creep to the door, easing it open with agonizing slowness. The footsteps are closer now, almost at my office.

I slip through, closing the door softly behind me. The dim, dusty staircase looms above, and I begin to climb, each step a battle against the creaking wood beneath my feet.

At the top, I push open the hatch and emerge onto the rooftop, the cold morning air biting against my skin.

The city stretches out before me, bathed in the soft, early light. I crouch low, my breath visible in the chill, and move to a spot behind a vent, where I have a clear view of the street below but am hidden from sight.

I hear the door to my office creak open, and I freeze, peering through the narrow slit of the hatch.

Sam’s figure appears, silhouetted against the dim light of the room. His face is a mask of confusion, eyes scanning the office, searching for any sign of me.

He moves cautiously, a hand on his holstered weapon, clearly on edge.

“Where are you?” he mutters under his breath, the frustration evident in his voice.

He takes a few steps into the room, his gaze landing on my journal, the torn pages fluttering slightly in the draft from the open door.

He picks it up, flipping through it with a frown, then tosses it aside with a growl of irritation.

I shrink back further, trying to control my breathing, willing my pounding heart to quiet.

Sam paces the office, his movements growing more agitated. He pauses by the desk, his eyes narrowing as he examines the scattered notes and the remnants of my research.

“Heard you,” he mutters again, louder this time, his frustration mounting. “I know you’re here.”

He moves to the window, peering out into the street below, then back to the office, his confusion deepening.

For a moment, he stands still, shoulders tense, then turns abruptly and leaves the room, the door slamming behind him.

I stay hidden, listening intently. The sound of his footsteps fades as he descends the stairs, but I remain where I am, too scared to move.

Minutes pass, each one stretching interminably, before I dare to creep back to the hatch and peer down.

The apartment is empty, the silence deafening. I descend the stairs cautiously, my body tense, ready to flee at the slightest hint of danger.

The office looks untouched, the only sign of Sam’s presence the slightly ajar door and the disarray he has left in his wake.

I move to the window, watching as Sam exits the building, his posture tense and angry. He looks back at my apartment, eyes scanning the windows as if expecting to see me staring back.

I duck behind the curtain, my breath shallow, until I see him move away, disappearing around the corner.

I let out a long, shaky breath, the adrenaline slowly ebbing from my system. My hands are still trembling as I move back to my office, closing the door behind me.
