Chapter 1 - The Unsettling Voices

Aline Jenkins, a 22-year-old university student, sat in her small flat in London, staring at the walls as if they held the answers to her problems. She had always considered herself a normal person, but lately, she had been experiencing strange and terrifying occurrences. Voices. So many voices. They whispered, shouted, and argued in her mind, making it hard for her to concentrate.

"Aline, what's wrong?" a soft voice whispered.

"Get out of my head!" Aline shouted, but the voice just laughed.

Aline's hands shook as she tried to focus on her studies. She had a psychology exam coming up, but her mind was a jumble of confusion. The voices had started a few weeks ago, and at first, she thought it was just her imagination. But as time went on, the voices grew louder and more persistent.

"Aline, you're not alone," a deep, raspy voice said. "We're here to help you."

"Who are you?" Aline asked aloud, feeling a sense of desperation. "Why are you doing this to me?"

There was no answer, just a chorus of laughter and whispers. Aline stood up and paced around her room, feeling trapped and scared. She didn't know what to do or who to turn to.

Suddenly, her phone rang, breaking the silence. Aline hesitated for a moment before answering it.

"Hello?" she said, trying to sound calm.

"Aline, it's Emily. How are you doing?" her friend asked, sounding concerned.

Aline took a deep breath before answering. "I'm not doing great, Em. I'm hearing voices, and I don't know what to do."

There was a pause on the other end of the line before Emily spoke up. "Aline, I'm here for you. We'll get through this together."

Aline felt a sense of relief wash over her. Maybe, just maybe, she wasn't alone after all.

Emily's voice was calm and reassuring, and Aline felt a sense of gratitude towards her friend. "Thanks, Em. I don't know what I'd do without you."

"What are the voices saying?" Emily asked gently.

Aline hesitated, unsure of how to explain. "They're just random thoughts and phrases. Sometimes they're loud and clear, and other times they're just whispers in the background."

"Do you think it might be related to your anxiety?" Emily suggested.

Aline had thought of that too. She had been experiencing anxiety attacks for months, but this was something different. "I don't know, Em. It feels like something more than just anxiety."

"Well, we'll figure it out," Emily said firmly. "I'll come over tomorrow and we can talk more about it. Maybe we can find a way to make the voices stop."

Aline nodded, feeling a sense of hope. Maybe with Emily's help, she could find a way to silence the voices and regain control of her life.

As they chatted, Aline heard a faint whisper in the background. "Don't trust her, Aline. She doesn't understand you."

Aline's heart skipped a beat. Who was this voice, and why didn't it want her to trust Emily?
Aline tried to push the voice aside and focus on her conversation with Emily. They chatted for a while longer, making plans for Emily to come over the next day. As they said their goodbyes, Aline felt a sense of relief wash over her. She wasn't alone, and with Emily's help, she could face whatever was happening to her.

As she hung up the phone, the voices grew louder, more insistent. "Don't trust her, Aline. She'll betray you."

Aline's heart raced as she tried to shake off the feeling of unease. She didn't know what to do or who to turn to. She felt like she was losing her mind.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed with a text message. It was from an unknown number. "Aline, we need to talk. Meet me at the coffee shop tomorrow at 2 pm. Come alone."

Aline's instincts told her to ignore the message, but her curiosity got the better of her. Who was this mysterious person, and what did they want with her?
