Chapter 1
"Since you are grade 12 now. I am sure that all of you take General Biology 1 and 2 right?" panimula ng adviser namin.
"Shuta! Recit 'to!" bulong si Tatrina sa likod ko.
"Shet! Wala akong alam." gatong naman ni Missy.
"While waiting for your next teacher, I would like to grab the opportunity to test your knowledge about that subject." ngumiti siya. "Lagot kayo sa General Biology teacher n’yo kapag hindi kayo nakasagot! Isusumbong ko kayo!"
"Tangina, nagbubutil na ang pawis ko sa noo." si Missy.
"This is a graded recitation. Get a 1/4 sheet of paper and write your name there."
"Maam, 1/4 maam?"
Napasapo nalang ako ng noo ko. Mga hindi talaga nakikinig!
"Pst! Pahingi papel!" kinalabit ako ni Missy.
"Yaman-yaman mo! Wala kang pangbiling papel!" I rolled my eyes.
"Edi ’wag! Ang damot! Hello Lysan! Pwede manghingi paper?" tanong niya sa katabi ko at agad naman siyang binigyan. "Thank you!"
"Bibigyan naman kita! Hindi ka lang marunong maghintay!" bulyaw ko.
Binelatan niya lang ako. "Hindi na ikaw ang kaibigan ko! Si Lysan na!"
Our adviser started to shuffle the 1/4 papers with our names on it. Hindi naman ako kinakabahan. I am confident na masagot ang lahat ng tinanong niya dahil marami akong natutunan sa Biology. My favorite subject.
"Let’s start."
I raised my hand para magtanong.
"Maam, can we volunteer po?" I asked. She just nooded and proceeded to shuffle the papers again.
"Here’s the first question... What is the smallest unit that can live on its own and contains the fundamental molecules of life?"
I raised my hand immediately.
"It’s a cell po." I answered. "It was discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665 who named them after their ressemblanced to cell."
Ngumiti si maam sa akin at hinanap ang 1/4 sheet of paper na pinasa ko.
Lysan raised his hand.
"To add informations about what she said, cells is categorized into two types: Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic. Eukaryotic cells does have nucleus and the latter doesn't." saad niya.
"Very good, Mr. De Vore!"
Kumunot ang noo ko. Added information lang naman ang sinabi niya. Wala rin naman tinanong ulit si maam na bago. How come siya lang ang may "very good"?
Muli akong tumayo.
"Also, Prokaryotic are single celled organisms. It has no nucleus and membrane bound organelles. It is smaller in size but larger in terms of population. On the other hand, Eukaryotic are multi-cellular, have nucleus and membrane bound organelles. It can live if one cell dies." dire-diretsong saad ko.
Nagulat ako nang muli ulit tumayo si Lysan.
"I will be discussing the significant events in cell biology. The cell theory tells us that, all living things are made up of cells. Next, cells are the basic unit of life and lastly, all cells come from pre-existing cells." he answered again.
"Shet! Hindi na ako kailangang kabahan kasi mukhang hindi na magtatawag si maam." narinig kong biro ni Missy.
"Parehas matalino! Dalawa na ang candidate for valedictorian kahit first day palang!"
