Fynn's POV
Student chatter filled the cafetaria. While some were occupied with their own groups and waiting for their turn to speak, others were openly noticing one another, and very few people were paying attention. She belonged to that group. Her companion spoke endlessly, but she truly listened, only interjecting when she had a question. I knew this because I had been listening in on their chat for the previous thirty minutes. I felt terrible about the things I had said during the bus ride, the most of which were lies. Her flushed cheeks during our conversation caused something to happen to me; I couldn't quite understand how I felt.
I spoke as though I was trying to tell myself that she wasn't significant and that I shouldn't have given her so much thought. The frequency with which I thought of her and the fact that I had no idea how to stop , it was simply repulsive.
However, I had to apologize for what I said. I motioned for her to show up at the parking lot as soon as our gazes locked the next instant. Although there was a major risk that she might not show up, I decided to take the gamble. Kate appeared as I was warming myself up by rubbing my palms together.
"Yes?" she asked in a composed tone.
" I apologize for yesterday. It wasn't wise of me to say that. You are anything but average."
Then she gave me a menacing smile and opened her mouth to spew poison," No matter how hard you try to act like a decent guy with your thank yous and your sorrys, the reality about individuals like you is that you are completely self-centered and egotistical. Look at you trying to cover up the fact that you are rotten inside and out, fynn. People are used by you and are so eager to feed off of your words that they are unaware of it. After using them, you discard them. They might accept your apologies and your nice-guy attitude, which serves as a mask for your lack of individuality but not me. So do me a favour and shove your apology up your arse."
She then left me and my nice boy attitude to rot as she crossed the parking lot and headed for the cafetaria without turning around. Despite the chilly weather in the parking lot, my heart felt warm to the core because I had finally got an emotion from her that was not indifference.
