Sunlight filtered into the room, hitting my eyes. With a groan, I sat up abruptly and was rewarded with all the blood rushing to my head in one go.
How had I gotten home yesterday? I briefly remembered the taxi ride home, but I didn't know how I got back here. There was no way Selena had trudged all the way downstairs to get me.
When realization struck, I scrambled out of bed to find Selena waiting patiently on our small couch. "Eva. Sleep well?"
"Just peachy." I wasn't looking for idle conversation right now, though. "How did I get home last night?"
"Aiden." She muttered, seeming almost resentful of the fact. "He carried you up here."
I blinked, tilting my head peculiarly. "Well, that was... nice of him."
"Yes, because Aiden is always oh so nice." Selena grumbled, angrily sipping her coffee.
"Are you okay?" I was a little concerned about her.
"I'm great. Thanks for asking." With that, she plastered on a smile, grabbed her bag, and left me standing bewildered in our dorm.
Luckily I had no classes today, because I was beyond tired from yesterday. I assumed we had gotten back late, because my shift had ended way before I had decided to leave with Aiden.
But, on that note, my hospital shift was earlier because I had no scheduled classes, so after getting ready I headed over there.
The first person I checked up on was Carrie, even though I usually waited until near the end of my shift so I could spend more time with her.
I headed to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit and found her in a recovery room in the secluded corner.
"Hey, Carrie. How are you doing?" I peeked in at her, and she gave me a weary smile.
"Hi, Ms. Evangeline. I'm a little tired, but the surgeon said I'd be good to go in maybe a day." She flexed her tiny fingers, trying to get the blood circulating.
"Was it scary yesterday? Aiden was really worried."
"Is he okay?" Carrie was a concerned sister, through and through. I don't think it even mattered to her that she was currently recovering.
"Yes, I think. But he'll probably come visit you. What about you, though? How did you feel?"
"It was the first time it happened, yeah. It was kind of scary. Usually I get my blood transfusions before my red blood cells get too low. But I think I was knocked out of it for a while, because I don't really remember anything."
"Well, do you need anything?" I was worried about her.
"I think I'm fine. Can you just... stay with me for a little?"
I gave her a smile. "Of course." I knew I had other patients to check on, but I sent a text to one of the other nurses to ask her to cover for me and I would switch rounds with her, as well. Carrie was more important right now.
She talked about the book I had recommended, and by the looks of it, she seemed to enjoy it.
I wasn't sure how long I was sitting with her before unsurprisingly, Aiden showed up. He was holding a small bouquet of flowers and a little card, which made Carrie's face brighten substantially.
He gently laid down his items on the foot of her bed and pulled her close. "Carrie. You're okay, right?"
"Yes, Kool Aid. I'm fine."
