My knee length black dress with a white waist denim jacket was quickly rejected by Esi and Asari. It was replaced by a short red skirt, white crop top and a black leather waist jacket. My father would be horrified. "Let's meet in the middle with something that doesn't scream nun but is still modest," I suggested.
We had been trying to find me an outfit for music night for an hour. There were thirty minutes remaining before music night began. Seyiso was one of the first performers. I couldn't be late. I wanted to get a front row table. Music nights had a diner style with tables filling the hall; food, drinks and snacks served while the musicians played.
"Your body shape is... the bomb. It'll make him want you more if you dress up in something less churchy," Esi said. "If all he cares about is how I look then I don't think I should be trying to impress him. Besides, he told me he liked me when I was wearing the saddest outfit in Chorale City."
Esi sighed. "She's right. Let her wear what she wants. If he doesn't like it then that's his problem," Asari said. I went back to my original outfit. Esi added diamond earrings and a gold quarter moon necklace.
I fixed my hair while Asari lied on her bed and Esi spoke to her boyfriend. Asari had been ready a hour prior with a black mini skirt, a white shirt and black corset over it. She made the outfit look like the something out of Pinterest. She always looked like she came out of Pinterest.
"How's he doing?" I heard Esi ask her boyfriend. He replied before she said, "Do you think Seyiso will come around. I mean he has to at this point." I saw her face fall. "I don't know his reasons but whatever they are, I hope he resolves them before anything happens. If anything happens. I'm sure your dad will be okay. I have hope. And when I have hope, nothing bad can happen," she said.
She caught me listening to her conversation and smiled weakly before turning around. I shouldn't have eavesdropped. The conversation involved Seyiso but it wasn't my place to pry.
"I'm sorry for listening," I said after she dropped the call. "It's okay. I mentioned your boyfriend's name, of course you would be interested," she said. "He's not my boyfriend,' I corrected. "Yet," she said, mischief shining in her eyes. She'd make sure that we ended up dating. I knew it.
"Did you follow him when I showed you his Instagram the other day?" She grinned. I knew it was her. "Someone had to make the first move and I knew you wouldn't make it. You're welcome," she said. "He thinks I stalked him." "It makes you mysterious and dangerous. Men love a little danger."
Asari rolled her eyes. "Do you have something to say, Asari?" Esi asked. "Just that I don't chase men. I attract them. It takes one look from me and they do all the work," she said. "Oh, which one of them is attracted to you now? Are any of them inviting you to music night and asking for your number? That's weird. How does this game of sit and do nothing work for you?" Esi mocked.
"You wait and see," Asari said, smirking. "I think Raiah will get pregnant first then me then Asari after a decade if she even decides to give a guy a chance," Esi said. "Pregnant? That is very far in the future. I'll finish my degree, get honours, get a job, get married then I'll think about babies," I said.
"I think you'll be pregnant right before graduation and get married straight after," Esi said. "My father loves me but I know he'd kill me. My mother would help him hide the body because if anyone in my family found out, they'd all panic and die. Those people are old and have heart and blood pressure issues. I can't be playing around like that," I said.
All of my aunt's and uncles were either deceased or way past retirement. My father's mother was the oldest in our family and she was extremely conservative. If I wore anything that didn't reach my ankles, she had something to say. I'd never wear pants in front of her. She'd evaporate.
