Prompt: You're born with a mark representing your soulmate.
For a while, Lena loved spending hours looking at the 'S' crest embedded on her ribcage, just above her heart. Then, Lex attacks Superman, and everything goes to shit.

Lena sighed, rubbing her temples as she looked at her bay windows. It was the end of yet another very busy day. She couldn't count how many meetings and calls she had gone to or taken. Her board was difficult again regarding the new technologies she aspired to develop. She recently had the idea of a bracelet that could help young aliens to maintain their human appearance. The idea came after a discussion with Kara Danvers, her best friend, who had friendly relationships with various species. They had been talking about how aliens could adapt and blend into earth customs and Kara had mentioned how children were often forbidden to go outside for long hours because the transformation was draining and thus were missing hours of school, pretending to be sick. Lena had immediately started brainstorming when she walked by her office, drafting numerous prototypes. Her board, however, didn't see the utility of her device, and half of it had expressed their opinion in borderline racist monologues.

Despite her struggles, a small smile made its way onto her face. Tonight was game night, meaning she was going to see Kara and all the people she could now call her friends. She still couldn't believe how the blonde had made her way into her heart and pulled her into her inner circle. Alex, Kara's sister, had been more than reluctant when Kara invited her the first time but the brunette's actions and genuine heart had overtaken the redhead's fears and soon, they became like sisters.

The only downside of it all was the time she spent with Kara. Not that she wasn't happy to see her, quite the contrary, but she was almost certain she had developed feelings that were more than friendly toward the blonde and she already knew they couldn't and wouldn't be together. Kara had been very adamant about not going out with anyone who wasn't her soulmate and Lena knew it wasn't her. The 'S' crest embedded on her ribcage, just above her heart, had been mocking her forever. Lena had grown to love the woman harboring the symbol. Supergirl was genuinely good, kind-hearted and strong in her beliefs. Lena had slowly fallen for her during their time working together. But at the same time, she had fallen for Kara, the goofy, sunshine, joyful reporter. Her heart belonged to both women and it was slowly killing her with guilt.

Supergirl and she had quite the history, from their mutual distrust at the beginning to working together to defeat Cadmus and her mother. The girl of steel, however, had never mentioned anything about her soul mark, remaining friendly but distant to the youngest Luthor. So Lena assumed either the superhero knew they were soulmates and didn't want to do anything with her romantically or she ignored it and Lena wasn't going to do anything about it. Luthors were destined to be alone and she would protect the ones she loved, even if she broke her heart in the process. Maybe that is why she dared to open her heart to the reporter, the first person who didn't see a Luthor but saw Lena for who she was.

Sighing again, Lena closed her computers and grabbed her stuff before heading out to Kara's apartment.

Sometimes, Lena wondered what the universe had been thinking when she was linked to Supergirl. She really thought it had all been a joke and the universe would correct it.

At the beginning of her life, she had loved her mark. She could still recall spending hours looking at it, gently caressing the lines forming the S, and wondering who could be behind. It brought a smile to her face during the hard times, knowing that somewhere, somehow, she was loved. When she was a teenager, she had started praying for her soulmate to be a girl. Voicing her desire at home had earned her a slap and three days without eating. She could still hear the vicious voice of her adoptive mother yelling « Luthors aren't dykes. ». But no matter what Lillian could say or do, Lena would look at the sky every night and pray to the moon for someone to love her.
