"This is a really bad idea," I muttered, getting into the truck. I slid across into the passenger side, and Jules followed me in. I handed her the keys, and leaned back, grimacing at the thought of talking to a pack full of werewolves who want nothing more than to tear me apart.
"Don't worry about it Beau, this'll be easy." She said weakly, like she was trying to convince herself as she nodded her head, slamming the door shut. "All we have to do is..." She said trailing off.
I gave her a tiny stare of disbelief.
"Not a single idea. Wow. Okay, what did you say to make them back off the first time? Don't worry this one doesn't have any fangs?" I asked sarcastically, making her laugh a little. Though there was a hint of stress in both our voices.
"Something like that." She whispered. " I basically told them that you were innocent. That you were one of the... you know." She said even quieter. I knew exactly who she was talking about. "Well, there... gone... and since you changed after - they probably didn't tell you about the treaty, so it wasn't fair to kill you."
"And Sam agreed?"
"Not really." She said, cocking her head to the side as she cringed a little. "I only got them to back off long enough to talk about it. Sam really doesn't want the treaty broken, even if she thinks you technically broke it first." She said with a groan, obviously thinking about the hoops she had to jump through to make that work. She started the truck up, pulling out of the place, and quickly getting onto the road.
"I'm not a part of that treaty Jules... I'm not one of them." I mutter, trying to ignore the ache in my chest.
I felt my angel kiss my kiss cheek, and her head resting on my shoulder.
I've noticed that she's been appearing more ever since I became a part of her world. She didn't come only when I was in danger, and not even solely when I'm at risk of hurting someone else. She came when I needed her. It felt good, having her like this. Even if I know... even if it might mean that I'm going insane.
We sat in silence for a few minutes, just driving. Jules told me that Sam wanted to meet over at one of the beaches, and we've got about a ten minute drive till we got there.
"Laurens dead," I said suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence. "But murders are still going on. Which means there's another vampire out there... or a bear? Don't tell me it's actually just been wild animals." Mostly joking, knowing for a fact that the other vampire out there is hunting me specifically.
"Like I said Beau, we've only got one prey, and that's you leeches - no offense," She said with a shrug, clearly not caring if it was offensive. "But yeah, this isn't over. Not by a long shot."
Her brow furrowed with frustration, and her eyes seemed to darken. "There were two of them. We got the female - Lauren, or whatever you said her name was - but there was another. We really hoped her mate would come straight at us, looking for a fight. In all the legends, if there's one way to tick off one of their kind, it's by killing the mate. But he just kept on running, coming back in, then slipping away. He acts like he's testing our defenses - like there's something he really wants on our land, and he's trying to get close enough to get it. We just don't have a clue as to what that is."
I tensed up through her whole explanation. I thought... yeah - I guessed right. Victor was here, killing hikers in the woods. He was here for me.
I couldn't really think. I don't have a plan. What if Charlie got hurt? What if I wasn't strong enough to keep him safe? What if Jules got hurt?
Suddenly, I heard the scrunching sound of metal. I looked down and I saw my hand gripping the door handle just a bit too tight. "Darn it." I breathed. There's another thing I'm gonna have to pay for, because there's not a chance I'm gonna be able to fix it myself.
