Chapter 11: Dinner

(A/N apologies for two longer chapters in a row! This one was over 1500 words.)

(tw: homophobia, slurs, verbal abuse, self harm, and themes of anxiety/depression, blood)

Veronica's POV (two weeks later)

Dear Diary, Heather and I have been dating for about two weeks now, and while I'm a bit sad that we can't act like a couple in school yet, she makes me so happy. She's even met my younger brother, Matthew, and they seem to get along really well! Matthew loves having Heather around and I love that they're friends. We're having a joint dinner with her family and my family tonight, so we can tell Heather's parents about us, and I'm really excited! I've gotta get ready since we leave in a little while.

~Yours truly, Veronica Sawyer

I decided to put on a nice light blue top, a black and gray checked skirt and a darker blue cardigan. Meanwhile Matthew put on his nicest polo, aka the only one without stains on it, and some dress pants. We all pile into the car and make our way over to the Chandler's house. Matthew has never been here before and he's never seen what their house looks like either.

"Woah, Veronica, is your girlfriend rich?" he asks, staring wide eyed at her house.

To us? Yeah. To Heather Mcnamara? No. We all get out and meet them, settling in for dinner. I obviously sit next to Heather, and Matt sits on the other side of me. We start eating, making good small talk, discussing whatever, when Heather reaches over under the table and grabs my hand, giving it a light squeeze. I nod.

So there's actually a reason Heather and I wanted to have this joint dinner, my parents already know but. Heather finishes my sentence as she holds up our interlaced hands.

"Veronica and I are dating! We have been for just over two weeks and we wanted you guys to know." She says, looking at her parents. Her mom looks at our hands with a face of pure disgust, and her father just walked away.

"You have ten minutes. Go gather whatever the hell you need and then get out of my house."

Heather C's POV

"You have ten minutes. Go gather whatever the hell you need and then get out of my house."

W-what, Mom why?

"I didn't raise a dyke, so you can either fix yourself, or get out of my house." I see Mrs. Sawyer covering Matthews ears through blurry vision. Fuck, I don't want to cry about this.

Fine. I say, getting up and running upstairs to gather my stuff. I see Veronica follow me to help pack and once we get upstairs I collapse into her.

"Shh, it's ok. I'll talk to my mom about you staying with us, ok? We have a spare bedroom you can use, or if it's alright with you, you can sleep in my room." She slowly rubs circles on my back and holds me, placing a small kiss on my head.

O-ok, thank you so much. I say through sobs.

"Now c'mon babe, let's start packing your stuff." She says, pulling away and looking into my eyes, pushing some of my hair behind my ear and wiping away a tear. We finish packing some stuff into two backs, and Veronica walks me out, glaring at my parents as we leave.

I get into Veronica's car with her family and melt into her.

"Shhh, it's ok, I'm here and my mom said it's ok for you to live with us. Do you want to sleep in my bed with me?" I nod my head, and start to drift off to sleep. I wake up with Ronnie carrying me upstairs to her room and setting me down on her bathroom sink. As I stir awake, I see her grabbing a makeup wipe.
