Unveiling the Past

CEO's Office

"Evelyn, your work will be a bit different today. As we start preparing for the company's fiftieth anniversary exhibit, your task is to gather and organize major events in the company's history.

 This exhibit requires accessing some confidential files, which only senior management can view. Our archive room is quite complex, so I've arranged for Tom to assist you. He's very knowledgeable about the company's history."

"Understood." Evelyn then left the CEO's office.

In the archive room, Evelyn saw Tom waiting and greeted him with a smile.

"Good morning, Evelyn. I'm glad to be working with you," Tom said sincerely.

"Good morning, Tom. Thank you for helping out," 

Evelyn replied, and they began sorting through the thick files.

The archive room was filled with various cabinets, folders, and file boxes. 

Evelyn and Tom spread some files out on a long table in a corner, starting to sort and organize. The air was filled with the faint smell of paper and ink, creating a nostalgic and tranquil atmosphere.

As Tom collected and organized the materials, he began to share the company's history with Evelyn. 

"Did you know? There was a time when our company was in a precarious state. It was Liam's decisive actions that turned things around."

"That part of history should be highlighted in the exhibit."

"Absolutely. It's in the file box near you. In 2005, Liam acquired several bankrupt companies, not only saving TechNova from crisis but also expanding its scale and significantly increasing its profits. Liam truly is a business genius."

2005, the year her father's company went bankrupt!

The file box seemed to beckon Evelyn like Pandora's box.

"Tom, I'd like to look at the files from 2005 to understand the specifics of the acquisitions," Evelyn said, trying to stay calm.

Tom nodded and led her to a file marked "2005 Projects." 

Evelyn opened the folder, finding old photos and documents. Her attention was caught by a document: a loan request from her father to TechNova, made just before his company's bankruptcy. 

In it, her father detailed the company's urgent financial crisis and requested funds from TechNova to survive the hardship.

Evelyn's hands trembled slightly as unease crept over her. She continued searching and finally found internal company meeting records. The records showed that most executives believed they should help their partner. 

However, Liam had explicitly opposed it during the meeting.

Her hands shook as she read on. 

The records detailed Liam's reasoning: if TechNova provided the loan, its cash flow would be severely strained, causing it to miss many investment opportunities. If they didn't provide the loan, MM Company (Evelyn's father's company) would soon go bankrupt, presenting a prime opportunity to acquire it at a very low price.

Evelyn felt a chill spread from her heart.

So... this is the truth?

"Evelyn, did you find something interesting?" 

Tom's voice suddenly came from behind her.

Evelyn quickly closed the folder and turned to face him, trying to remain calm. 

"Oh, I just found some old photos and documents that might be useful for the exhibit."

"Evelyn, you don't look well. Are you alright?" 

Tom asked with concern.

Evelyn shook her head, trying to keep her voice steady. 

"I suddenly feel a bit unwell. I think I need to take the rest of the day off."

Leaving the archive room, Evelyn felt a dark cloud looming over her heart. 

Her steps were unsteady, her heartbeat rapid like a drum. She could hardly believe the truth she had uncovered, feeling as if the world beneath her was collapsing. She hurried to the elevator, tears welling up in her eyes.

As the elevator doors closed, Evelyn couldn't hold back her tears anymore. They flowed like a flood. She leaned against the elevator's mirror, staring at her reflection, her eyes vacant and her face haggard. Her body trembled with the intensity of her emotions, and the tears kept streaming down, unstoppable.

"Why now? Why did I have to find out after the proposal?" 

Evelyn screamed in her heart, her vision blurred by tears. She had been ready to let go of her past hatred and start a new life with Liam, but now everything was shattered.

Stepping out of the building, Evelyn took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, but the pain and anger surged like a tide. She looked up at the gray sky, filled with endless questions and despair.

"Why couldn't I have known sooner? Why couldn't this truth have been revealed earlier?"

Evelyn's heart bled, feeling her trust and love trampled upon. 

She questioned how she could have fallen in love with such a man, how she could have entrusted her future to a complete liar.

She wandered the streets aimlessly, her vision blurred by tears. She had no idea where to go, feeling her heart being torn apart. 

Her body grew weaker, and she felt she could hardly stand. Finally, she found a secluded park, collapsed onto a bench, and buried her head in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably. 

Her cries were filled with anguish, as if she were pouring out all her pain. Her shoulders shook violently, and her tears dripped through her fingers, falling silently to the ground as a mute protest.

She thought of the day Liam proposed, kneeling with love and promises in his eyes. 

At that moment, she believed she had found happiness, thinking the past pain could be erased.

But now, her happiness had turned into a cruel joke.

Her body, weakened by her emotional turmoil, finally stopped crying. Her face was pale, her eyes empty. She felt utterly drained, but the pain remained as sharp as ever.

Evelyn wiped away her tears and forced herself to calm down. 

She coldly recalled every word and detail in those documents, each one like a sharp blade stabbing her heart. 

Her initial shock and pain gradually transformed into a cold and determined anger.

Suddenly, a fierce resolve rose within her. 

She couldn't let this defeat her. 

Love was only a part of life, not the entirety.

She needed to cast off the weak, love-stricken Evelyn and let the cold, wise Evelyn return.
