As a result, Dane sought advice from his sexual partners on how to advance his relationship with Eve.
Was he truly in love with her, or was this just a dumb expression?
"So, you discussed this with the women you've been sleeping with?"
Dane sighed as if he had given up on concealing anything.
"Yes. Who better to understand a woman's heart than them?"
At this point, Eve couldn't even hide her twisted grimace.
Dane's entire scenario was a disaster from every viewpoint.
Or was it incorrect from the start?
"When I realized you hadn't invited other women to your bed, I realized divorce wasn't the best option. I feared our relationship was permanently harmed. But it wasn't the case."
Finally, his reaction on the last day of their trip made sense.
"After all that, I realized I liked you, but I kept seeing other women out of spite. I assumed you were rejecting me since you were continually inviting someone else to my bed..."
Eve finally greeted his wandering gaze.
"I sincerely regret my behavior during our marriage. I apologize."
Apologies were out of the question.
They were divorced, and Eve had no plans to reconcile with Dane.
She decided to cut him off before he got his hopes up.
She was reminded of Azazel, her stepson, who resembled Dane when she saw his sincere remorse.
The man who had kissed her between her legs with reverence.
A thrill raced up her legs, and she crossed them lightly.
"...Why suddenly? I assumed my face was not your type."
Her rage and skepticism evaporated swiftly.
The episode with Azazel was separate, yet her guilt made it difficult to do so.
Remembering that one-night stand brought back feelings of shame and bewilderment, exacerbated by the alimony she'd gotten.
Dane nodded confidently in response to her comments.
"The promise will be kept."
Given her interaction with Azazel, the prospect of pushing Dane away was tough.
Even though it was a one-time occurrence, that day hung heavily on her conscience.
Dane nodded as if it were self-evident.
"If we continue meeting like this, all sorts of talk will follow us."
Eve was dreading the month ahead in the capital.
"I'm sorry about that."
"More nobles will bother me every time we meet. More letters will be arriving at the mansion."
Listing her potential problems appeared to alleviate some of her guilt.
"I'll take care of the nobles' issue for you."
Eve struggled to accept Dane's excessively confident vow after realizing his thought process was even more unpredictable than she had previously suspected.
After all, he can cause more issues.
However, denying his assistance seemed wasteful, especially given 'Eve Jena's' uncertain chances in the capital.
Eve had recently felt the power and weight of the 'Hound' appellation.
The Hounds were more critical than anticipated, and she missed the weight of that now-extinct surname.
But she didn't want to admit to Dane that she needed his assistance.
It would likely bolster his ego and make him more annoying.
Eve sat up straight and looked Dane in the eyes.
She couldn't act precisely like Countess Hound, but a similar position felt acceptable, especially since he attempted to impress her.
"Can I decide how to handle the situation?"
Dane paused for a beat before nodding.
"As long as it's within reason."
"I'll observe how the rumors unfold before deciding."
"All right, fair enough...Shall we start with the desserts?"
Eve rolled her eyes at his flat response, and he rambled fast to pacify her.
"This location is well-known. The treats are wonderful. Could it cheer you up?"
This was a wonderful diversion for her, caught between the similar father and son.
Dane grinned and motioned for the staff to bring the tea and dessert table.
The colorful and elaborate sweets were delicious.
The servants, who had most certainly overheard their chat, wore puzzled expressions.
That is understandable, given that even the persons involved were bewildered.
At the very least, Eve was relieved that this ludicrous exchange would not be exposed.
Eve picked up her fork, ignoring the looks.
For now, calming her frazzled nerves with sweetness was the priority.
