"I have some things I need to think about right now. Things I need to look into."
"It seems so."
"...But before that, I have one more question."
The Count inhaled deeply as if bracing himself.
"So, it wasn't you who brought the women?"
"Yes."
"But why did you just watch it happen?"
"That thing... you mean the bedroom encounters?"
"Yes, why did you just let it happen when I was with other women?"
His shockingly unsophisticated inquiry surprised Eve.
"I thought it was just your way."
The Count closed his eyes briefly, then opened them again, struggling to find the appropriate words.
"So, you never felt any... sort of emotion for me, you know..."
Eve screamed out to him with narrowed eyes as his words turned uncertain.
"Count, I mean Dane."
The Count came to a halt and stared at Eve.
She looked him in the eyes and said,
"It seems there was some misunderstanding between us."
The Count vigorously nodded.
"But I don't think it changes anything about us."
There was something fishy about what happened between Eve and the Count.
They were, however, divorcing regardless.
He didn't have to be so distressed or appear so guilty.
Eve was baffled by him.
Why was he feeling so bad?
Eve had never been offended or upset by the Count's sexual relations with other women.
The Count's staff never made fun of her for it, and she wasn't the sort to brush it off.
He had treated her politely as 'the Countess,' per their contract, so he did not need to be apologetic. But the Count insisted,
"A lot changes."
What changes exactly?
The Count had discovered a new love and divorced Eve because of it.
Eve had no idea who brought the women to the Count's bedroom or what they were after.
It wasn't her problem in the strictest sense.
Honestly, she didn't take it seriously, thinking it was probably a ruse by one of the Count's sexual partners or an obsessive admirer.
So, if the Count accomplished all that for her despite her lack of such tastes, she may admit he was more caring than she believed.
But that was the end of it.
So Eve had to inquire,
"What is it, then?"
"Everything. ...Eve, do you resent me?"
Eve responded immediately.
"No."
"Do you hate me?"
"Not that either."
"Do you like me?"
Eve shook her head.
"Well, I'm not sure what you mean by that, but haven't we respected each other for the past three years?"
She wished the Count would stop feeling bad over such a minor affair.
If they're going to talk about guilt, she should be the one feeling guilty for forcing his son to perform oral sex on her two days ago.
Eve made a cross with her fingers behind her back. The Count then inquired once more.
"In a romantic sense?"
"You mean, do I like you as a man?"
"Yes."
"I've never thought about it in that way."
"Why?"
It was an oddly simple inquiry.
"Due to our contract. I wasn't meant to be interested in your personal life. Why would I develop emotions?"
She had never intended to see him in a romantic way from the start.
It would have been a loss for her to develop affection for him.
Whoever sent women to the Count's bedroom had wasted their time.
'Even if we had sex, I wouldn't have fallen in love with the Count, right?'
The Count groaned dejectedly and murmured to himself in response to Eve's statement.
"Yes, that's correct... In any case, the contract had to be terminated."
After a while, the Count sat up straight and turned to face Eve.
"Have you sorted out your thoughts?"
"Yes, Eve."
With the fog lifted, his mature and stunning features shone through.
He reached out his hand to her.
"You've been through a lot these past three years."
Eve took his hand in hers.
"It was a short time, but thanks to you, it was comfortable."
"Yes. We'll run into each other again. I'll send you a mail."
"Okay."
The Count's fingers brushed over the inside of her palm, but he motioned towards the door, suggesting it was time for her to depart.
It appeared to be a usual action.
Eve nodded to the Count and exited the room.
The finale was a little weird but still a satisfactory conclusion.
