Lily's pov:

The following Monday after school, I found myself standing at Jake Anderson's front door, nervously adjusting the strap of my backpack. Mia had insisted that I needed to work on our biology project with Jake, despite my initial hesitation. It was a warm afternoon, and the late spring sun cast a golden hue over the quiet neighborhood. Taking a deep breath, I rang the doorbell.

The door swung open, revealing Jake standing there, a surprised expression crossing his face before he quickly masked it with a smirk. "Hey, Lily. Come on in," he said, stepping aside to let me enter.

I stepped into his house, taking in the tidy foyer and the faint aroma of something baking in the kitchen. "Thanks," I replied, feeling a bit awkward in his presence.

Jake led me to a cozy living room where a low coffee table was already scattered with our biology textbooks, notebooks, and some printouts. "We can work here," he said, motioning for me to take a seat on the plush couch.

I settled in, feeling a mix of curiosity and uncertainty. The last time we were alone together, Jake had been surprisingly sincere, but I couldn't forget his reputation as the school's bad boy. His demeanor now was casual, almost too relaxed, which made me wonder what his angle was this time.

"We need to start with the research on genetic inheritance," Jake stated, pulling out his notebook and flipping to a page filled with notes. He was surprisingly organized, his handwriting neat and precise, contrasting with the image I had of him.

As we started with the project, I found myself impressed by Jake's knowledge of biology. He explained concepts clearly and patiently, occasionally throwing in a joke or a witty comment that made me chuckle despite myself. Slowly, the initial tension between us eased, replaced by a comfortable rhythm of discussion and occasional banter.

Time flew by as we worked through the material. At one point, I glanced at the clock on the wall and realized it was already past six. "Wow, I didn't realize it was getting so late," I remarked, surprised at how quickly the hours had passed.

Jake glanced up from his notes, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Yeah, time flies when you're having fun, right?"

I nodded, feeling a small pang of guilt. Despite his bad boy image, Jake had been nothing but helpful and focused during our study session. It was hard to reconcile the Jake I was seeing now with the rumors and stories that circulated around school.

Just then, footsteps approached from the hallway, and a small voice called out, "Jake, are you done yet?"

I turned to see a young boy standing there, his wide eyes fixed on Jake. He couldn't have been more than eight or nine, with tousled brown hair and a mischievous grin that lit up his face.

Jake's expression softened instantly. "Hey, Eli. Yeah, we're almost done," he replied warmly, motioning for the boy to come closer.

Eli darted into the room, his eyes widening as he spotted me sitting on the couch. "Hi!" he greeted enthusiastically, his gaze curious.

I smiled at him. "Hi, I'm Lily. It's nice to meet you, Eli."

Eli beamed, his excitement palpable. "Are you Jake's girlfriend?"

I felt the redness in my cheeks get worse. "Oh no! We're just friends, we're working on a school project together," I explained, taken back by his enthusiasm.

"That's still cool! Jake never brings friends home," Eli remarked, casting a teasing glance at his older brother.

Jake chuckled, ruffling Eli's hair affectionately. "Well, Lily's helping me out with biology. She's pretty smart."

Eli nodded solemnly, his eyes sparkling with admiration. "You're lucky to have her helping you," he said earnestly, making me blush even more at the unexpected compliment.

"I am," Jake agreed, his tone soft. He glanced at me briefly, a hint of something unreadable in his gaze before he turned back to Eli. "Why don't you go finish your homework, buddy? Lily and I will be done soon."

Eli pouted playfully but nodded, disappearing down the hallway with a dramatic sigh. Jake watched him go, a fond smile on his face.

"He's a handful, but he's my little brother," Jake explained quietly, as if sharing a secret. "Our mom's usually not home until late, so I look after him after school."

"That's really nice of you," I replied genuinely, touched by his devotion to his brother.

Jake shrugged nonchalantly, but there was pride in his eyes. "He's a good kid."

We returned to our project, but now there was a new ease between us, a shared understanding that went beyond the assignment. Working alongside Jake in his home environment, seeing him interact with Eli, painted a different picture of him—one that was caring and responsible, far from the careless rebel the rumors painted him to be.

As we wrapped up the last of our notes, I couldn't help but feel a sense of closeness with Jake that I hadn't expected. Despite his rough exterior, there was a depth to him that intrigued me, a vulnerability that he rarely showed to others.

"We're done," Jake announced, closing his notebook with a satisfied smile.

I gathered my things, feeling a mix of reluctance to leave and anticipation for what might come next. "Thanks for letting me come over, Jake. And thanks for helping me with the project."

"Anytime," he replied easily, walking me to the door. As we stood there, I hesitated, unsure of what to say next.

"See you at school?" I asked tentatively, suddenly feeling self-conscious.

Jake nodded, his gaze steady on mine. "Yeah, see you."

I smiled gratefully, turning to leave. Just before I stepped out, I heard Eli's voice calling out from down the hallway, "Bye, Lily!"

"Bye, Eli!" I called back, waving at him as I closed the door behind me.

Walking down the quiet street towards home, I couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted between Jake and me. Our project had brought us closer, revealing sides of him that few people ever saw. As I replayed the afternoon in my mind, I realized that Jake Anderson was far more than just a bad boy—he was someone who cared deeply about his family and had a depth that intrigued me more than ever before.
