Jake's pov:
Football practice had been grueling today, but I thrived on the intensity. It was my outlet, a way to channel all the pent-up energy and frustration that life threw at me. As I wiped the sweat from my brow and made my way to the locker room, I couldn’t help but think about Lily. She was becoming a constant presence in my thoughts, a distraction I wasn’t sure I could afford.
“Good practice, man,” Jordan said, clapping me on the back as we walked in. “You were on fire out there.”
“Thanks,” I replied, my mind still elsewhere. “You too.”
As we changed out of our gear, I noticed Lucas watching me. He’d been acting strange lately, more guarded, almost like he was sizing me up. It was only a matter of time before he confronted me about something.
Sure enough, as we headed out of the locker room, Lucas fell into step beside me. “We need to talk,” he said, his tone serious.
“About what?” I asked, though I had a pretty good idea.
“Lily,” he said, confirming my suspicions. “I don’t know what your deal is, but you need to back off.”
I stopped walking and turned to face him. “What’s your problem, Lucas?”
“My problem?” he echoed, anger flashing in his eyes. “My problem is that you’re messing with Lily. She doesn’t need someone like you complicating her life.”
I felt a surge of anger. “And you think you know what she needs?”
“I know she doesn’t need a player who’s only interested in winning a bet,” he shot back.
My jaw clenched. “This isn’t about the bet anymore.”
“Really? Because it sure looks like it is,” Lucas said, stepping closer. “You’re just using her to prove something to yourself and your friends.”
“That’s not true,” I said, my voice low and dangerous. “You don’t know anything about what’s going on between me and Lily.”
“I know enough,” he snapped. “I know that she’s a good person who’s been through a lot, and she doesn’t need you adding to her problems.”
I took a deep breath, trying to keep my temper in check. “Lucas, this isn’t your business. Lily can make her own decisions.”
“She deserves better than you,” he said, his voice hard. “And I’m going to make sure she knows it.”
I felt a pang of fear at his words. The last thing I wanted was for Lily to get hurt because of me. But I couldn’t let Lucas dictate what happened between us. “Stay out of it, Lucas,” I warned.
He shook his head. “I’m not going to let you hurt her, Jake. I care about her too much for that.”
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me standing there, my fists clenched in frustration. As much as I hated to admit it, Lucas had a point. Lily had been through enough, and the last thing she needed was more drama.
But I couldn’t walk away from her. Not now. Not when my feelings for her were growing stronger every day. I had to find a way to prove to her—and to myself—that what we had was real.
As I headed home, I replayed the conversation in my mind. Lucas’s words echoed in my head, fueling my determination. I wouldn’t let him come between me and Lily. I’d find a way to show her that I was serious, that I cared about her more than anything.
But first, I had to figure out how to navigate this mess I’d created. Because if there was one thing I was sure of, it was that I couldn’t imagine my life without Lily in it.
