Lily's pov:
The school day felt like an eternity as I anticipated my conversation with Mia. After everything that had happened with Jake and Lucas’s repeated warnings, I needed to talk things out with someone. Mia had been a good friend since my first day and I trusted her advice.
After the last bell rang, I met Mia at the library. She was waiting for me, her expression curious and a little concerned.
“Hey, Lily! What’s up? You look like you have a lot on your mind,” Mia said, patting the spot next to her on the bench.
“Hey, Mia. Yeah, I do,” I replied, sitting down beside her. “I just… I need to talk to someone about everything that’s been going on.”
She nodded, her brown eyes focused on me. “Of course, I’m all ears. Spill.”
I took a deep breath, gathering my thoughts. “It’s about Jake. And Lucas. Things have gotten really complicated.”
Mia leaned in closer, her curiosity piqued. “Go on.”
“Jake and I have been spending more time together because of our project, but Lucas keeps warning me about Jake, saying he’s just going to hurt me,” I explained, feeling the weight of my emotions as I spoke.
Mia nodded thoughtfully. “I get why Lucas would be worried. Jake has a reputation, and he’s hurt a lot of girls. But you know, people can change. Do you think Jake is being genuine?”
“I do,” I said, my voice tinged with uncertainty. “He’s different when it’s just the two of us. He’s kind and thoughtful. But I can’t ignore Lucas’s warnings. He’s my friend, and he cares about me.”
Mia sighed, running a hand through her hair. “It’s tough, Lily. You have to trust your instincts. But also, don’t ignore the red flags if you see them. Just be careful, okay?”
“Yeah, I will,” I promised, feeling a little better after talking it out.
Mia gave me a reassuring smile. “Good. And remember, I’m here for you, no matter what. Now, how’s the project going?”
I laughed, grateful for her support. “It’s actually going really well. We’ve made a lot of progress.”
“That’s great! See, something good is coming out of this,” Mia said, nudging me playfully. “Just take things one step at a time.”
“But there’s something else I need to talk about. Something I haven’t told anyone yet.”
Mia’s eyes widened with curiosity. “What is it?”
I hesitated, feeling a lump in my throat. “It’s about my mom. She… she passed away six months ago.”
Mia’s expression softened, and she reached out to squeeze my hand. “Oh, Lily, I’m so sorry. I had no idea.”
“It’s okay,” I said, my voice shaky. “I haven’t really talked about it much. But it’s been really hard, and I think that’s part of why I’ve been so unsure about everything.”
Mia nodded, her eyes filled with understanding. “That makes sense. Losing someone you love is incredibly hard. But you’re strong, Lily. And you’re not alone. You have people who care about you.”
Tears welled up in my eyes, and I felt a mix of relief and sorrow. “Thanks, Mia. I needed to hear that.”
We sat in silence for a while, the weight of my confession hanging in the air. It felt good to finally talk about my mom, to share my grief with someone who understood.
As the evening wore on, we talked about lighter things, and I felt a sense of normalcy returning. Mia’s friendship was a lifeline, and I was grateful for her support.
When I finally got home, I felt a sense of peace I hadn’t felt in a long time. Opening up about my mom had been difficult, but it was a step toward healing. And despite the complications with Jake and Lucas, I felt hopeful about the future.
Jake's pov:
The library was quiet, the soft murmur of conversations blending with the occasional rustle of pages. I hadn't planned on being here, but Jordan insisted we needed a quieter spot to work on our history project. As we searched for an empty table, my attention was drawn to Lily and Mia sitting in a corner, deep in conversation.
I hesitated, my gaze fixated on Lily. She looked serious, her brow furrowed in concentration as Mia spoke animatedly. I couldn't help but notice how her eyes sparkled with a mixture of emotions, perhaps vulnerability.
Curiosity getting the better of me, I casually strolled closer, feigning interest in a nearby bookshelf. From my vantage point, I could catch snippets of their conversation. Mia was talking about something academic, but then Lily's voice, soft yet tinged with sadness, caught my attention.
"...and it's been tough since she passed away," Lily was saying, her words carrying a weight I hadn't expected.
My heart sank. The mention of her mother's passing struck a chord within me, stirring up memories I preferred to keep buried. I leaned in closer, trying to hear more without appearing intrusive. Guilt gnawed at me for eavesdropping, but I couldn't tear myself away.
Mia nodded sympathetically, her expression mirroring Lily's sorrow. "I can't imagine how hard it must be for you, Lily. If you ever need to talk..."
Lily smiled weakly, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Thanks, Mia. It means a lot."
Their conversation drifted back to schoolwork, but my mind was elsewhere. Thoughts of my own struggles surfaced, memories of late nights at the hospital, the weight of responsibilities beyond my years. I knew what it was like to carry a burden, to put on a brave face while your world crumbled inside.
As Mia and Lily continued their discussion, I discreetly moved away, my thoughts heavy with what I had heard. The weight of Lily's grief lingered in the air, a reminder of how fragile life could be.
Jordan nudged me, breaking through my reverie. "Jake, you with us?"
I nodded absentmindedly, my mind still reeling from what I had overheard. "Yeah, sorry. Just thinking."
Jordan raised an eyebrow, his expression curious. "About Lily?"
I shrugged nonchalantly, though the turmoil inside me told a different story. "Something like that."
"I hope you don't catch actual feelings for her. This is just a bet remember."
"Oh yeah. Don't worry I would kiil myself if I ever caught feelings for the new girl," I said with a scoff.
He smirked knowingly but didn't press further, turning his attention back to our project. I followed suit, though my thoughts kept drifting back to Lily.
The library session passed in a blur, as I Mia and Lily wrapped up their discussion, gathering their things to leave. On impulse, I decided to also pack my books away.
"Okay J-dog, see you tomorrow at school?" Jordan interrupted me from my thoughts.
"Yeah", I responded with a low voice, still wrapping the thoughts around my head.
