Just One Phone Call

Jesus! Just make the damn call!

I couldn't do it. I couldn't bring myself to call the number. I stared at the napkin longingly. Maybe if I stare at it long enough, it'll make the call for me.

I sighed and set the napkin down again. This was the tenth time I thought about calling today. I reached for the phone and dialled.

Dialled? Do people even say that anymore?

It rang twice before it was answered.

"Hello?" A woman's voice asked.

"Hey, Peggy. It's me James."

"Oh, hey. Want me to get Steve for you?"

"Yeah, that'd be great." I tried to sound happy. I always try to sound happy. I think Steve's the only one who notices that I'm not.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Steve."

"Oh, hey Bucky. What's up?"

"I still haven't called her." I looked at the napkin with Natasha's number on it.

"Seriously?"

"I don't... What would I say?"

"Oh my goodness, Buck. Just talk to her!"

He hung up. Really? Really?!

Just do it, Barnes! Okay? Who was the lady's man all those years ago? What do they like? Romance and smooth talking. Don't mess up and stutter!

I dialled her number before I could talk myself out of it.

Dialled?

"Hey, it's Natasha."

"Hey, Nat." I tried to sound calm.

Oh gosh, what if I didn't sound calm?!

"Who is this?"

"Oh, yeah. Sorry, it's me, Bucky. Y'know you gave me your number at the coffee shop a few days ago."

"Oh, hey Bucky! I was wondering if you were ever going to call. Well, listen.. Right now isn't the best time.."

CRAP!!!! WHAT DID I DO? Does she not like me?

"Oh.."

"Oh, no. Hun, nothing like that. I'm working. We should get a coffee later, I'm free around two."

"Okay," I smiled. I need to stop freaking out about things. "Two sounds good. Where at?"

"Hmm.. How about that little coffee shop I gave you my number in?"

"Okay."

We said our goodbyes and hung up. I called Steve quickly.

"Bucky, for the love-"

"I called her!"

"Good! What'd she say?"

"She wants to get coffee later today. Hey, what was that coffee shop's name that we went to a few days ago?"

"Central Perk."

"Awesome. Wish me luck on not screwing up!"

He laughed, "good luck, buddy."
