THE KNAVE, or as most call her, arlecchino, was known to be ruthless and cold hearted, with eyes that can easily make a person feel suffocated. people say she'll torture you so bad you'll regret being born. however, that is simply far from the truth. at least, a bit from the truth.
under he cold and merciless facade, lie a somewhat affectionate woman, to people close to her at least. even though she can be scary at times, she did have some good in her. an example would be her founding an orphanage, not exactly but something like that. known as the 'house of the hearth', arlecchino had taken in various children, ranging from young kids to teens and older.
that, was the reason why you had vowed to serve her no matter what. arlecchino had seen your potential, and taken you in when no one else would. she saved your life, and thus, she offered you to be her assistant / servant. you agreed, without a doubt.
now here you are, arlecchino's most faithful servant. some would even call you her " lap dog, " (though whoever founded that rumor was somehow missing a few days later). without a doubt, the knave would trust you over some of her own fellow harbingers.

backstory aside, arlecchino had tasked you to watch over the house of the hearth for a day, since she had important matters to attend to. of course, being the obedient little assistant you are, you agreed and took on the mini quest.
arriving at the house, you sucked in a deep breath, and prepared to go in.
you expected a bunch of chaotic and crazy kids, yelling and trashing the place (you had no idea why, it just seemed like something arlecchino would let her 'children' do). you were instead met with another scene.
even more chaos.
the smaller children were running around spraying chemicals at each other, like a game of life-and-death tag. the older ones were shit talking others, and yelling for absolute no reason. then there was the famous magician duo, trying to calm the younger ones down with magic tricks. unfortunately, it only made the tiny gremlins even more riled up. whats even more strange, was the silent blonde with a diving helmet, talking to a penguin. a goddamn penguin. you wondered if he was on drugs.
your jaw hung open, flabbergasted at the sight of crazy children. just what had arlecchino been teaching these kids ?!
you sighed, rubbing your temples before coughing loudly, finally catching the attention of the lousy children. the younger ones paused in their step, looking at you with curious eyes. the older ones simply stayed quiet and judged you with their eyes. even when their mouths were closed, you could tell they were calling you all sorts of slurs (and probably worse).
the only normal ones, being the magician duo (and the delusional diving blonde but we dont talk about that ), let out a sigh of relief. the two came up to you, one with a blank expression, and one with a more-than-glad smile.
" ah ! you must be father's assistant, y/n, correct ? " you nodded in response, straightening up your posture.
the male magician nodded, extending his hand out for a handshake. taking your hands in his, he flipped it over and planted a kiss on the skin, winking. shocked, you silently gasped and simply looked at him flustered at the sudden gesture.
" my names lyney, and this is lynette, my sister. welcome to the house of the hearth ! " he welcomed, while his sister nodded in acknowledgement, a faint smile on her lips.
you nodded, smiling. this was surely going to be a looong day.

you were right. hours passed and you were absolutely exhausted. the younger ones had made you run so much you questioned the stability of your legs. the older ones had yapped your ears off, talking about the latest gossip. and of course, the magician duo played multiple tricks, which ended in you wondering if reality was also a trick. you had tried to interact with the penguin talker (though he responded in simple nods or head shakes, so you just quit trying to socialize with him at this point).
when arlecchino came back, she expected you to be standing, posture tall, and a formal attitude, reporting your task a success. what she was not expecting was her assistant wearing a costume, holding a fairy wand, hair shriveled up and a face that said 'im so done with life'.
" hah...welcome back miss knave. " you breathed out, the living soul absolutely drained out of you. you had at least tried to look formal, but you ditched the idea as soon as you even tried to stand straight.
arlecchino was...shocked to say the least. and a bit amused. it was funny seeing her assistant looking like a tired middle aged parent, who had stayed up taking care of their children. she chuckled mentally at the sight.
" i see the task went...well ? " she asked, a small smile playing at her lips. you sighed, and nodded. chuckling, she patted your head, ruffling your hair (ignore if bald). you ever so slightly leaned into her touch.
" you've done well. take a rest, i'll handle these problematic children of mine. " nodding, you tiredly walked to a cargo box, and sat on it.
the knave turned to her children, staring them down with a look that says 'you guys are so dead'. even if arlecchino found it amusing, it still angered her a bit that you had to deal with irritating children, and it made her feel just a bit guilty after seeing your tired face.
how funny. arlecchino, one of the coldest harbingers, having a soft spot for an assistant ?!
maybe. it was you that was her assistant, after all.
