The back door opened and Pei's father stepped into the room.  The crowd stood up when the organist began playing the wedding march.  Pei's father gave a sharp shake of his head to the organist, his eyes scanning the room.

"I'll find out what's going on," Mew said to Tul.  He walked down the aisle feeling everyone's eyes on him.  They went out the door and to their changing room.

"Pei is gone," her dad said.  He pulled out a note from his pocket.  "She's not coming back."

"Okay," Mew responded, his mind going into overdrive.  "Go get Tul and give us about five minutes.  Then tell everyone the wedding is cancelled and to go home."  Mew took the note and waited.

"What's going on?", Tul asked with wide eyes looking around.  "Where's Pei?"

Mew grabbed his hand and pulled him toward the exit.  "She's gone.  Here, she left a note for you.  I want us to be out of here before everyone leaves."

Tul allowed himself to be dragged to Mew's car.  He waited until they were on the way before reading the note.

Dear Tul,

I couldn't do it.  I tried to live up to expectations and to do what is right, but I wasn't happy.  I love you, but I'm not in love with you.  If I went through with the wedding, I would have come to hate you and I didn't want that for either of us.

I know you are wondering why I did it this way.  Why didn't I say something before the ceremony?  Well, I wanted to be the bad guy.  No one will expect anything from me, and that is freeing.  I can be with my true mate without judgment.  At first, I thought I could marry you and still see her, but that wouldn't be right or fair.

I'm sorry.  I don't expect you to forgive me, but I hope you can understand.  I know you will find your mate one day.

Pei

"What did she say?" Mew asked.

"Basically that she didn't love me and she has a girlfriend," Tul responded.  He leaned his head against the window, his eyes closed.  Tears rolled down his face.  He didn't know what to do.  They had planned their future together.  Pei had seemed genuine.  Tul couldn't believe how clueless he had been.  He felt so stupid.

The rest of the ride to Mew's home was silent.
