The afternoon sun was dipping towards the horizon, casting long shadows across the bustling streets of New York City. Inside Vought Tower, the day was winding down as employees wrapped up their tasks and prepared to head home. You had finally made some headway in deciphering the security breach, piecing together what information had been stolen. All you needed to determine now was who was behind the breach, a task that would require coordination with other IT professionals—a reason why you had been summoned to the office despite your usual work-from-home arrangement.
Homelander had been called away on urgent business, leaving you alone with Carol, who was still diligently working on her own stack of papers. The air in the office was filled with the low murmur of her occasional muttering and the soft hum of your computer. You had managed to find the information you needed, the data stolen from Vought's system now clearly marked and identified.
Finally, the clock struck five, and the office began to empty. You felt a surge of relief knowing you could finally leave. Carol, still engrossed in her work, barely acknowledged your presence as you stood up and gathered your things.
"Thank you for your help today," she said absentmindedly, her eyes not leaving her documents. "Can you come in again tomorrow? We'll need you to help with the investigation."
The request caught you off guard, and you hesitated. You had hoped to escape the confines of the office and avoid any more social interactions. "I-I suppose," you stammered, your heart sinking at the thought of another day in the office. "I'll be here."
Carol gave a distracted nod and continued working, and you took that as your cue to make your escape. With a deep breath, you slipped out of the conference room and made your way to the restroom, hoping to wait until the building was clear of any lingering employees.
Inside the restroom, you locked yourself in a stall and sat down, feeling a mix of anxiety and relief. You pulled out your phone and checked the time—an hour and thirty minutes had passed before you deemed it safe to try sneaking out. The hallway outside was quiet, the clacking of footsteps and the murmur of conversation having died away.
Gathering your courage, you stepped out of the stall and slowly made your way to the exit. The anticipation of finally leaving made your steps tentative, each echo of your footsteps in the empty hallways amplifying your nerves.
As you rounded a corner, you nearly collided with a tall figure standing in the hallway. Your heart skipped a beat as you realized who it was.
"Homelander!" you exclaimed, your voice a high, strained whisper.
You instinctively covered your face with your hands, unable to meet his gaze. "I-I'm so sorry!" you stammered, your cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "I didn't mean to—"
Homelander's eyes flicked to your hands covering your face, then back up to your nervous form. His expression was a mix of curiosity and detached amusement. "Someone's in a hurry." he said, his voice smooth and slightly mocking but with a hint of genuine curiosity.
You trembled slightly, unable to look up at him. "I-I'm just trying to go home." you managed to say, your voice barely more than a whisper.
Homelander raised an eyebrow, watching you closely but not pressing you for more details. "I see," he said simply, his gaze lingering on you. "It's quite late to be heading out."
You bit your lip, feeling a rush of heat to your cheeks. "Y-Yeah, I just wanted to get out after everyone else left," you said, trying to sound casual but failing to meet his eyes.
Homelander's eyes followed you as you fidgeted, his interest apparent though he remained reserved. "You don't seem too comfortable here," he observed, his tone almost thoughtful.
You shook your head vigorously, still covering your face with your hands. "N-No, I'm not," you mumbled, feeling the weight of his gaze on you.
Homelander's eyes glinted with an inscrutable mix of emotions as he took in your nervousness. "Well, if you're on your way out, I won't keep you," he said, his tone carrying a hint of reluctant amusement. "Just be careful out there. Not everyone is as kind as me."
You nodded quickly, your hands still covering your face as you tried to make your escape. "T-Thank you. I-I'll be careful."
Homelander's gaze followed you as you took a hesitant step past him, heading towards the exit. There was an almost palpable tension in the air, his presence a heavy weight on your shoulders.
As you reached the door and pushed it open, you glanced back at him one last time. The look in his eyes was a mix of curiosity and something deeper, an unspoken promise of future encounters.
You stepped out into the cool evening air, letting out a sigh of relief as you made your way down the steps and away from the imposing structure of the Vought Tower. The encounter had left you with a knot of tension in your stomach and a thousand thoughts racing through your mind.
