The morning sun had barely begun to crest the horizon when Homelander arrived at the secluded retreat location, a pristine lakeside resort far removed from the chaos of the city. The air was crisp and clear, a stark contrast to the usual din of urban life. As he stepped out of the car, the familiar weight of his iconic supe suit felt both reassuring and constraining.
Ashley greeted him with a clipboard in hand, her demeanor brisk and efficient as always. "Good morning, Homelander. Just a reminder, all personal electronics need to be handed over for the duration of the retreat. You'll get them back in three days."
Homelander's jaw tightened imperceptibly. He had known about this requirement but it still felt like a tether being yanked. He handed over his phone reluctantly, feeling a pang of unease as it left his hand. The thought of not being able to contact Reader gnawed at him.
Ashley continued, oblivious to his internal struggle. "The retreat is meant to help the team reconnect and improve synergy. No distractions, just nature and each other."
He forced a smile, nodding curtly. "Sure, Ashley. Sounds perfect."
As he walked towards the main no lodge, his thoughts drifted to Reader. The memory of their recent encounters, the heat of their shared moments, lingered at the forefront of his mind. The way she had responded to him, shy yet so bold, had left an indelible mark. The thought of not hearing her voice, not seeing her messages for three whole days, left him with a hollow ache.
The day passed in a blur of team-building exercises, trust falls, and group discussions. Homelander participated dutifully, his public persona perfectly in place, but his mind remained elsewhere. He couldn't help but wonder how Reader was doing, whether she was thinking about him as much as he was about her. Each hour felt like an eternity.
By the time the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the tranquil lake, Homelander felt a deep sense of restlessness. The absence of his phone was a constant reminder of the distance between him and Reader. He found himself staring at the stars, hoping she would understand his silence.
As night fell and the retreat settled into an uneasy quiet, Homelander found solace in the memories of Reader. The way she had looked at him, her touch, her voice—they were his anchors, his silent companions in this enforced solitude. He hoped that when the retreat ended, she would still be there, waiting to continue the connection they had started.
Lying in his bed, staring at the rustic ceiling, Homelander let his thoughts drift back to their last conversation, the promise of more that had hung in the air. He missed her, deeply, and he could only hope she felt the same.
The next three days would be a test of patience and restraint, but he was determined to endure it, knowing that the end would bring him back to her. As he finally closed his eyes, he made a silent promise to himself and to Reader: he would make it up to her, and their reunion would be worth every moment of this temporary separation.
