Zane stared out of the floor-to-ceiling windows of his penthouse, the city lights shimmering like a sea of diamonds below. It was a view he had grown accustomed to, one that usually brought him a sense of calm after a long day. But tonight, his thoughts were elsewhere, tangled in the words his mother had spoken just hours ago.
It had been an unexpected conversation. His mother rarely asked anything of him beyond the usual pleasantries and occasional family gatherings. She had always respected his independence, understanding that Zane had his own way of doing things. Yet today, she had surprised him with a request that left him unsettled.
"Zane, there's someone I want you to meet," she had said, her voice gentle yet firm. "Her name is Emily.."
The request had caught him off guard. His mother, known for her grace and subtlety, had never been one to interfere in his personal life. She had always trusted him to make his own decisions, whether it was about the business or his relationships. So why now? And why this mysterious woman named Emily?
"Emily," Zane repeated the name quietly, as if testing how it felt on his tongue. It was a name that held no meaning for him, no connection. Who was she, and why did his mother care enough to bring her up? There was something about the way she had spoken, a tone that hinted at more than she was letting on.
His mother had been evasive when he asked for details, offering only the vaguest of explanations. "She's someone I think you should know," she had said, her eyes softening with a look Zane couldn't quite place. It wasn't worry, exactly, but it wasn't the usual calm assurance she exuded either.
He had pressed her further, trying to glean some hint of why this woman was important, but his mother had deflected, changing the subject to lighter topics, as if she didn't want to burden him with her thoughts. It was unlike her to be so reserved, and that alone made Zane uneasy.
