"to john b." jj held up his flask.

they stared at the tree they had just engraved john b's name on it. they didn't wanna say it out loud, but it was so obviously a tombstone.

"and to sarah." kiara added.

kailani was holding a box full of john b's stuff; something to remember him by. they had dug a hole next to the tree to bury the box. she placed it in the hole and laid a couple of flowers on top. they then started to cover the hole with dirt.

kailani and jj got unbelievably closer this summer. if you told a normal person passing by that at the start of summer, they hated each other's guts, they'd probably laugh at you and ask if you think they're stupid.

when pope and kiara went to vandalize tannyhill, kailani stayed home. she was extremely pissed off at ward cameron, but she knew that vandalizing his property wouldn't do anything. might even be doing more harm than good.

she sat on her bed, reading some fantasy book. for the first time in months, kailani felt peaceful. the reason why she loved to read so much was because it was able to take her away from the hell that was her reality. as soon as she opened a book and began imagining the magic happening in it, she was able to detach herself from the shithole she was in.

once she reads the first sentence, she's instantly transported to an imagination nook in her mind. all the scenes from the book come to life so vividly; something she wouldn't be able to see even in a multi-billion dollar budget movie.

she's locked in her mind, but not in a suffocating way. in a way that brings her security and comfort. no one can hurt her here, because no one can enter. not even her thoughts. no one can snap her out of the daze she seeps into once she opens a book.

"open the window, princess!"

no one but him.

she ran to the window and pushed her window open.

"hi!" she smiled widely at him, taking a step back to give him some room to step in.

"hey." he took of his baseball cap, lacking the usual bubbliness he had.

"what's wrong?" she asked, noticing a hint of sadness in him.

"it's nothing." he waved her off, plopping onto her bed.

"i think we're well past you lying to me, jj."

"i got fired." he spilled. "for yelling at rafe."

she rubbed his shoulder comfortingly, knowing he was the only provider for his family, and he now had a less of an income.

"wanna get a stick n poke?" she proposed, knowing he's been begging her to get one for the longest time ever.
