The next morning after breakfast, Nell showed up at the pool with the others from Aquatics. Sybil passed out their schedules—they had each been lent a clip board and given a card stock folder with the Camp Morgan logo on it. Yesterday, Sybil had given them a demonstration of all the duties they were expected to perform. Today, she had the team do all the tasks while observing and critiquing them. Nell found herself wanting to do a good job—to please Sybil. That must mean Nell respected Sybil because she had a hard time putting effort into pleasing those she did not respect. In most cases, this was teachers who had to earn it, and if she felt like doing the assignments they gave, they were doing a good job. If she did not feel like doing the assignments—she still did them, even when she did not respect them—it was a lot harder to get it done with any kind of sparkle. Yes: Nell wanted to sparkle for Sybil.

"Can we put on some music?" Isabel asked. Hm, that's nervy, Nell thought. Didn't Isabel know she should be kowtowing to Sybil?

But Sybil just said, "Sure. Just not too loud and nothing too crass—we are in nature after all."
Radio stations airwaves did not really penetrate the redwood forest, but there was a collection of cassette tapes in the pool shed. Most of them were ancient artifacts, but Izzy chose a Wham! album and popped it in.

"That seems camp friendly enough," she said, with a wink at Nell. Nell smiled back and even found herself chuckling because Seth had a look on his face like he was not enjoying George Michael's command to "wake me up before you go go" one bit.

"I'll bring some tunes tomorrow," he muttered.

"Me too," Izzy said.

They looked at Nell expectantly.

"Yeah. Okay."

One of their tasks for that day was to come up with a skit for the staff training meeting after lunch. They would be introducing themselves and also trying to make the new arrivals, the counselors, feel comfortable.

"I think props are always handy," Sybil said, and it was not a suggestion. She passed out flotation devices, and they practices introducing themselves holding a rescue buoy. Sybil instructed them to say their name and one fun fact about themselves.

"I'll go first," she said. Then she cleared her throat. "Ahem. I'm Sybil. I'm head of the Aquatics Team, and one fun fact about me is that I compete in two triathlons every year."

Nell didn't know if that was exactly a fun fact. More of an intimidating truth, but who was she to judge?

Sybil gave a bow with a flourish of her hand. Everyone applauded enthusiastically.

"That's how I like to do it," she said. "But you decide the way you want to end it. Bust a move."

"Okay, I'll go!" Izzy said. She stood up tall, cradling her float like a bouquet of roses. Nell wondered if she'd been prom queen or competed in pageants. All signs pointed to yes.

"Hi, Camp Morgan homies! I'm Izzy, and a fun fact about me is that I like to knit!" She curtsied.
