My house says to me, "Do not leave me, for here dwells your past."
And the road says to me, "Come and follow me, for I'm your future."
- Khalil Gibran
Memories are precious. Memories give breath to old things. They make the past present in our minds. Only one day is left before my departure to London then to England. The things I saw every day now seem new to my eyes. I opened my wardrobe and looked at the folded memories. Each folded piece of clothing reminded me of different memories. I couldn't control my tears. Now, these clothes are leaving Indonesia for Oxford to make new memories. Still, they seem sad for leaving the country where they were manufactured, where they became popular, where they have integrity.
I took down my old pink sweater, which was old but still held many memories for me. It reminded me of rainy days when I read Jane Eyre in a cozy nook of my room.
Suddenly, my mom entered into my room.
"Anna!! What are you doing?" she asked. I looked at her with excitement. "I have a present for you." She gave me a vintage diary which I hadn't seen in my life. The lock added more beauty to the diary. I couldn't express my happiness; I hugged my mom tightly and felt her warmth. I'm gonna miss you, Mommmmmm. You are an amazing mom!'"
I looked at the photo, which represents the most beautiful part of my life: me with my brother Ryan, who has stood by me in my ups and downs. I haven't expressed my feelings for him, so I decided to write a letter. He means the world to me.
Just then, there was a knock on the door-it was Ryan.
"Ryan, Are you gonna miss me?" I asked.
He initially said "No," but then tears filled his eyes as he repeated, "No, no..." This brought tears to my eyes too. He gave me a locket with a photo of him and me inside. It's the greatest gift I've ever received. He is the greatest gift I have!!
My father handed me a camera, saying, You are now free as a bird; make sure to use it positively.
The aroma of Nasi Goreng (Indonesian fried rice) entered my nose. I hurried to the kitchen. My mom prepared Nasi Goreng, a fried egg, chicken, and shrimp. We enjoyed our lunch together and ended our day with the first click of my camera.
