The best time of the year was when we left for the cabin. We've owned the property since before my grandparents met. My Grandma Em, short for Marjorie, lived there when she was young. When Inez and I were little, we called it "the lakes," even though there is only one in that town. It's always been my favorite place. I love the wisteria crawling up the side of the building. Despite it being referred to as the cabin, it's definitely not. It's too big to be a cabin, but "lake house" doesn't quite fit either. I suppose it would be slightly bigger than a normal house, but I'm not sure. Back home, I live in a little bit of a mansion.

My grandparents got all of their money from investing in oil and ballet in the fifties and sixties. I guess that makes it old money. My mother was planning to expand our small fortune by becoming a doctor.

She decided on nursing and met my father. He was going to be a doctor. My parents got married, and a few years later, they had me. Right after I was born, my mother was involved in an accident. The accident resulted in her turning to drinking and my parents got divorced. My dad is still around, but after living with my mother and grandmother, I understand why he had to do it.

I don't have a bad relationship with my mother, but it's hard to deal with her when she spirals. I mostly just stay in my room or go over to the twin's house.

My best friends are twins. Evelyn and Alisa Maurice. They both have "old money," but not in the way we do. They own half of the town at their cabin in Wisconsin. It is a cabin in the way that mine is, but not quite as big, which makes sense. It's Wisconsin.

My cabin is in North Windermere, Maine and it's a nine hour drive from here. That's why we stay all summer. The drive is one thousand percent worth it. Occasionally, we fly, but not very often.

This year, Grandma Em said that Inez and I can bring one friend. I'm not sure who my cousin will bring, but I really hope it isn't Augustine.

Inez and Augustine are a part of the "popular crowd" at my school. I am, but not how they are. They both play volleyball, and Inez is smart, academic wise. Augustine... not so much. I stick to my books, musicals, and music. I'm smart, too, and I have straight A's, as well as a 4.0. I just prefer not to make a hobby out of it. Basically, during school, my cousin and I avoid each other.

I want to bring the twins, but Grandma said I can only bring one. There's one twin who I know will come, but the other might be a little offended. Evelyn is like me- loves music, musicals, and unlike me, drama. Alisa is a little more like me- loves being outside, especially in the middle of nowhere, and enjoys reading.

I grab a hoodie out of my closet and walk downstairs.

"Betty, where are you going?" my mother asks. In the glass she's holding, there's a shiny gold liquid. I try to keep from rolling my eyes and heading back up the stairs. Instead, I walk towards her and tell her.

She just sighs and takes another drink from her glass. "Hurry up. You still have to pack. We're leaving on June 5th, that's tomorrow." I nod. "Have you figured out who's coming with us?"

I shake my head and grab the keys off the hook in the foyer. "Going to do that right now.

My mom just sighs. "You better hurry. I love you, sweetie," she says.
"Love you too, mom."

My mom and I look almost identical. Dirty "old money" blonde hair, light brown eyes, wide shoulders, and hips. While she's tall and skinny, I'm sort of tall and a little wider of a build. I suppose we look normal, although there's something about my mom that just draws people in. She's been on several dates since dad left, and she's a huge flirt, but none of them have ever stuck. And she definitely doesn't bring them around me.

I open the garage door and head in. Sitting in front of me are a few different cars. There's an old Chevrolet truck that used to be my grandma's but doesn't run as good as it used to. She refuses to have it looked at.

Instead of the truck, I turn my attention to our Audi R8.
