Chapter Two

A few minutes later, I arrive at the twin's house. I don't bother knocking, they probably already know I'm here anyway. I walk into the kitchen and greet Cindy, the twin's mom. "Morning, Cindy!" We're on a first name basis rather than Mrs. Maurice, considering I've been friends with her children since about third grade.

I'm pretty sure I met them because Alisa and I were in the same class. Eve must have been in a different class, especially because it's a bad idea to put siblings in the same class. I remember that Alisa and I were in Mrs. Krautkramer's class and Eve was in Mrs. Mrozenski's. We became fast friends, and soon enough I was going to her house after school, when I started hanging out with Eve.

"Oh, good morning Betty! I didn't even know you were coming today!" Cindy says.

Okay, so maybe she didn't know I was here, but I'm sure the twins did. "Oh, sorry about that. I just have to talk to the twins before I start packing." I lean closer to the woman who practically helped raise me. "I have to pick who to take to the lake today."

Her eyes widened with understanding. "Ohh, gotcha. Well, good luck!" Cindy says with a sympathetic look.

"I don't think it would be too hard considering that Eve hates the outdoors," I reason.

Cindy just smiles and I walk upstairs.

I knock on Evelyn's door. "I'm coming in," I call. When I open the door, she's sitting on her bed with her phone in her hands and airpods in. She doesn't see me yet, so I move to the side of the room and walk towards her. Now she's facing away from me, so I run up and grab her sides.

"Aghh!" she shrieks. She whips around and glares at me. If looks could kill, my body would be cold on the floor.

I start laughing. Her phone flung onto the floor, so I pick it up and hand it to her. "Meet- in- Alisa's- room," I say, still wheezing.

I leave her red faced and go to Alisa's room. I don't knock at her door, this time and I just walk in. She's still asleep. I look at her clock and cringe. It's only 10:00 am. I'm not even up at 10:00 am most of the time. I shake her awake gently.

"Alisa, wake up." She doesn't stir, so I start poking her. "Alisa... Alisa," I shake her arm. "Alisa!" She opens her eyes and scans the room. Alisa jumps seeing how close I am. I have to force myself not to laugh.

"Fuck you forever," she says groggily. There's nothing like a mad teenage girl.

Eve walks in and sits on Alisa's bed and I stay standing. "Okay guys. Today I have to pick who to take with me to the lake." Eve and Alisa look at each other. I fall back and flop onto the bed between them. I roll over and look up at the ceiling. Alisa has those little glow-in-the-dark stars stuck to her ceiling. I've always wanted to be able to look up at the stars like this. Sometimes I can see them at the lake, but not often.

"Well, you know I don't like being outside," Eve says. "But I guess it would be fun to go."

"We're not outside that much," I say.

"Yeah, but, bugs."

"Would it be weird to, like, have you guys switch halfway through? Ugh, maybe I'll just beg Em to let you both come."

"I do have something going on this summer," Eve says. She grins. "And a guy."

Alisa and I look at each other and squeal. "Spill!" We say at the same time.

Eve smiles again. "It's Caden, the one who lives across the street from the coffee shop."

We may be rich, but every girl needs a job. We all work at the coffee shop, The Coffee Cabin. I've seen Caden in there a few times, but not enough to relate it to Eve being there.

"Oooh. Are you sure he didn't think you were me?" Alisa jokes. They look similar, but they aren't identical. Eve is taller and skinnier with darker hair and blue eyes. Alisa has blue eyes, too, but her hair is lighter and she's built more like me. Broad shoulders and average height. Alisa was born two minutes before Eve, and she'll never let her forget it.

"Funny." Eve rolls her eyes.

I take her hand. "I'm happy for you, Eve," I say.

Alisa jumps up. "So is it settled? I'm going with you this summer?" I look over at Eve and she nods.

"Looks like it! I'll send you a packing list!" I tell Alisa. "I'm so excited!" I stand up and hug Eve. "Sorry you can't come," I say.

"That's okay. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it that much anyway," she says.
