Chapter Four

I wake up and get ready to go. I do all of my skin care (gotta keep that acne away) and brush my teeth. According to my dentist, brushing them before I eat is more effective than brushing them after you eat, although it’s good to do both. I’ll eat on the road (hopefully), so I won’t brush them after.

I did my heatless curls last night, but I have a while before I’ll need to take them out. My mom and Grandma like to take lots of pictures on the way there, so I’ll take them out in the car. I’m still not sure whether we’re flying or driving.

I text Alisa and ask if she’s all ready. It took me 20 minutes to get ready, and it takes Alisa even less.

Hopefully she’s ready because it’s already 7:00 am and we need to be on the road (to the airport or on the way there?) by 7:30 am.

I drag my suitcase down the stairs where my mom and grandma are waiting for me. “Are you ready for it?” Grandma asks.

“What’s ‘it’?” I ask, jumping off the last step.

“I wish you wouldn’t stomp like that,” my mom says with a scowl.
I mutter sorry and walk outside.

"Are we driving or flying?” I ask them.

“Driving,” Grandma says as Mom says “flying.” They look at each other.

“I already booked the flight.”

“How many people did you book it for?” Grandma asks.

“Seven people. Me, you, Betty and her friend, Inez and her friend, and Eliza,” Mom says.

My grandma smiles. “Seven is my favorite number,” she says. “Alright. We better get going.”

“We need to go to the twin’s house,” I say. We have to pick up Alisa, but she hasn’t answered her phone.
We pile into our black SUV and arrive at the twin’s house a few minutes later. I get out of the car and run up to the door. I knock and Cindy answers. “Hi, is Alisa ready?” I ask.

“Yes, I think so. You should probably run up and check on her, though.”
I run upstairs and open her door. Alisa is still sleeping. “Alisa!” I yell, shaking her. “Hurry your ass up. It’s time to go!” She jolts awake.
“Shit!” she yells.

“Yeah, we’re gonna be late! Hurry!” I drag her suitcase outside while she starts getting ready. I get to the car and update my mom and grandma on what happened. My mother does not look thrilled.

“That girl better get out here within three minutes,” she says. I nod and run back into the house and up the stairs. Alisa is practically asleep again and decidedly not ready. I grab a small bag out of the pile in her closet and sweep all of her things into it.

“In the car,” I say. She’s already dressed, so that’s good. I get the rest of her things and a washcloth and rush her out the door. “Bye, Cindy, Mike, and Eve! See you in a few weeks!”

“Hold on girls,” Cindy says. “I have some mini turnovers that you can eat in the car! They’re on the counter, it will just take a second to grab them.” She rushes off to the kitchen and comes back a second later with a tupperware full of mini turnovers. Thank God for Cindy.
“You’re a lifesaver!” I tell her.
They all say goodbye and Alisa does too.

Alisa gets ready in the car and we speed to the airport. Alisa and I eat the mini turnovers on the way.

There isn’t a way to tell what flavor they are until you bite into them. They all have red filling spilling out of them, but even then they could be strawberry, cherry, raspberry, or something else. Mine was cherry, my favorite. There were seven, but now there’s only three left. I try to stuff the rest in my suitcase, knowing that they’ll be cold by the time I get them out of there.
