Nobody really noticed I was gone, except James, I guess, who narrows his eyes at me when I sit back down at the table.

Alisa is still making heart eyes at a guy across the room.

The dinner goes by in a blur. A few hours later, we’re back at the lake.
Alisa and I go upstairs to change.

“So who’s the guy you were making heart eyes at all night?” I ask her.

“I’m not sure…” she says dreamily. “I hope I see him again.”

Pretty sure that’s all I’ll get out of her.

We brush our teeth and then I put my pajamas on back in my room. When I’m done, Alisa comes in and sits on the bed, blankets in hand.

“Sleepover?” she asks.

“Oh my god, we haven’t had one of those in forever,” I say. Everytime I’m over at her house, I’m in the spare bedroom. We haven’t had an actual sleepover in probably five years.

She settles into my bed, which is huge, by the way, and I turn all the lights off. One side of my bed faces the lake, so I always sleep facing that way, but it’s the spot Alisa took. I lay down on the other side. My bedroom has a killer view of the lake, and I love just staring at it and falling asleep. There’s also a skylight and ladder, so at least I have that.
Soon enough, I see her chest rising and falling softly. I look up at the skylight, unable to see the stars. I close my eyes and...

Sleep doesn’t come.

Frustrated, I climb out of bed and walk over to the window, trying to see if the stars are even out tonight.
I can’t see anything. I turn back to the bed and grab a few blankets and a pillow. I turn around and climb the ladder beside my bed, and open the sky light. I climb onto the roof and get situated.

“It’s freaking cold,” I mutter under one of my blankets. The other is between me and the rough roof tiles. I look up at the sky, and sure enough, it’s too cloudy to see the stars. I shut my eyes and sleep eventually comes.

* * * * * * *

I wake up not knowing where I am. I look up and there is a face above mine.

“What the hell?” I exclaim. It is still dark outside and I have my glasses on, but they’re foggy, so I can’t see much.

“Hey,” a voice says.

I can barely make out the blonde hair and brown eyes, but once I do, I realize who it is.

“James,” I say in acknowledgement.
“The fuck are you doing out here at,” he checks his watch. “2:30 am?”

“Oh, thank god,” I say under my breath. Nobody is awake to see that I’m gone. Yet.

“So?” he presses.

I roll my eyes. “What are you doing out here at 2:30 am?”

He narrows his eyes. “Answer my question first.”

“I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t see the stars from my room, so I came up here to see and fell asleep.”
