Do you remember the movie back in the 60s of Oliver Twist, In which he holds up an empty bowl at the orphanage and plaintively asks ; Please sir, may I have some more? This was followed by the song: Oliver, Oliver, never before has a boy asked for more.

He was hungry of course, or starving more like. Well, I felt similarly one morning at breakfast at our hotel in the Hague, where the serves were the smallest I'd ever seen and probably as small as the hotel could get away with. Yes, the Cosmos tours were budget minded, but this was ridiculous. The evening before the serves at dinner were pathetically stingy and we left the table still hungry. We all went to the nearest cafe to fill up on coffee and cake.

Anyway, breakfast looked as if it would be a repeat of the evening before. We, my new friends and I, decided enough was enough, or rather, not enough. Betty and Marlene voted that I should go and bat my eyes at the good looking waiter and ask could we please, please have some more, as we were so oo hungry.

Why me, I protested.

Because you're the youngest and the best looking, they replied. It's sure to work.

I very reluctantly stood and did as I was asked and it did work a treat. He instantly came to our table and plied us with more rolls and pastries, ham, jam and cheese. It was a real confidence boost for me. I think I went back to my room and practiced smiling and batting my eyes, just so I wouldn't lose my touch.

However, we didn't miss the envious, slightly hostile stares of our fellow travellers,.

Well, they could have asked too. If you don't ask, you don't get.
