The past few days have been distressing. Porsche stayed home for an entire week, with his mom and dad taking time off work to be with him. They did their utmost to make him feel better, and Porsche felt even worse for causing them trouble. After a week of misery, he decided to return to his routine.
It was late afternoon, and Porsche was at soccer practice, though he wasn't playing. He sat under a tree, looking lost. His gaze was distant, anchored to nothing, as a profound sadness weighed heavy on his heart. It wasn't anger that stirred within him for what Way did; it was a sorrow too deep to comprehend. How could someone who had known him since childhood wound him so deeply with mockery? Way's actions hurt him deeply, and he had no idea how to move past this trauma or how to trust people again. Trust shattered, he wandered in despair, questioning if he could ever be accepted as he truly is, if love would ever find him, if someone would ever hold his hand with pride and claim him to the world. Tears threatened to spill from his burning eyes, yet he felt powerless to stop them. A profound helplessness engulfed him, pulling him toward a dark path where happiness, safety, and trust seemed unreachable.
He stood up, feeling helpless, but soon, the world began to spin around him. His legs wobbled, and he started to fall as his vision blurred. Just as he was about to hit the ground, someone caught him, pulling him close. The man's voice, filled with urgency and fear, called his name, begged him to open his eyes and shouted for others to bring water. Though Porsche couldn't see the man's face due to his blurry vision, he could sense the man, his cologne was familiar, and he had a sense of safety and comfort in those arms.
Minutes later, Porsche opened his eyes and found himself in the university infirmary. He noticed a man standing with his back turned to him, yet somehow, Porsche knew who he was. Although Porsche had seen him only once but had imagined him in his mind thousands of times. It felt as though he had known this man in a past life. Kinn was dressed in a beige tailored pant and a white polo t-shirt paired with shiny black shoes. A diamond-studded Rolex adorned his right wrist. His hair was slicked back, and he looked as sharp as ever, focused on his phone, appearing somewhat busy and tense.
Kinn noticed Porsche waking up and immediately rushed over, offering him water. Porsche accepted the glass with gratitude. They both remained silent until the doctor came to check on Porsche, who was fine by then and ready to leave. Since Kinn had signed in as his guardian, the school didn't contact Porsche's parents. Kinn offered to drive Porsche home and Porsche, feeling a bit tired, accepted.
Kinn knew the way to his home but didn't want to alarm Porsche, so he asked, "Can you guide me, please?" As Kinn drove, he occasionally glanced at Porsche to ensure he was okay. They sat in silence until Kinn finally broke it.
"I don't know if you remember me."
Porsche smiled slightly and nodded.
Kinn's nerves melted away, replaced with happiness-no, more than happiness. Knowing that Porsche remembered him filled Kinn with a profound joy alleviating the worry he had felt about being forgotten since their first meeting long ago.
"You, okay?" Kinn asked, his voice soft.
Porsche looked at him. For a brief second, their eyes met before Kinn's gaze returned to the road. "I'm fine, I just need a good sleep," Porsche replied.
Kinn sensed something different, an elusive change within the boy. Maybe it was his eyes. When he first saw those eyes, they sparkled with childlike mischief, a gleam that had enchanted Kinn and kept him awake for many nights. But today, those eyes seemed distant, sad, and tired, as if they had shed too many tears or lacked sleep for days. Kinn was distressed, unsure how to keep his composure. He always takes things very seriously when his loved ones are hurt or troubled. Fidgeting in his seat, he knew he couldn't force Porsche to open up, so he had to remain calm.
