Kinn found himself torn between the sterile halls of the hospital and the cold demands of the office. His heart ached to stay by Charlie's side in these trying times, but his work beckoned, its importance not to be ignored. A new project hung in the balance, with fortunes on the line, and without Charlie, who had once been its guiding hand,Kinn felt lost as if wandering through a fog without a compass.
Three weeks had passed since Babe was admitted to the hospital. He woke up after two days of surgery, but those two days were a nightmare, a stretch of waiting that tested every nerve. Charlie teetered on the brink of despair, and his family shattered at the sight of their son in such a state. And Kinn, he felt the weight of helplessness, a pain that ran deep knowing he could do nothing to ease the suffering of those he loved. Fear gripped them all, their breaths shallow with uncertainty. When Babe finally regained consciousness, a new wave of dread washed over them. He was thrown into a violent seizure, and then there were the problems with his sight, not blindness, not yet, but the creeping possibility of a dark future where his vision might fail. This news drained the last of Charlie's strength, leaving him hollow and lost. Three long weeks have dragged on, each day a torturous count towards the hope of seeing Babe well enough to come home. But as the days stretch on, that hope feels like a distant dream, a star just out of reach.
It was a cold December day, a rarity in Thailand where the weather is usually hot. But that day, the air was unusually chilly. Charlie was especially careful, trying to ensure Babe didn't catch a cold and worsened his already fragile state. He spoke with a nurse about getting a heated blanket and other items to keep Babe comfortable. Babe lay in bed, watching Charlie speak with the nurse, and a sudden wave of sadness hit him. His heart ached at the sight of his love looking so worn. For the first time in a long while, Babe truly saw Charlie. He had been so consumed with his own troubles that he hadn't noticed his husband's struggle. Now, seeing the man before him, Babe realized the toll these months had taken on him. Charlie looked older as if the weight of these past months had aged him a decade. His hair had begun to grey, his frame had thinned, and exhaustion had hollowed out his once vibrant eyes. His lips, once soft and pink, were now pale and dry, speaking of nights spent sleepless by his side.
A single tear escaped from Babe's eye, not for his own suffering but for the man he loved.
When Charlie finished speaking with the nurse, he returned to tuck Babe gently into the blanket, his face softening into a tired smile.
"Are you okay, love? I've asked for a heater; she said she can arrange one." Charlie's voice was warm but laced with fatigue.
Babe looked up at him but said nothing. As Charlie prepared to leave for the pharmacy, mumbling something about needing more medication, Babe reached out and caught his hand.
It startled Charlie, who had grown used to Babe's distance, months without his touch, or even a glance. For a moment, he stood frozen, his eyes wide, as if a spell had been cast upon him.
"Stay, please," Babe whispered in a weak voice.
Charlie said nothing. He simply sat in the bedside chair, motionless like a doll, as if his only command was to sit.
"I'm sorry, please forgive me, Charles," Babe whispered, clutching his hands. His sobs were nerve-wracking. Babe's tears flowed endlessly, and seeing him like this shattered Charlie even more. It was as if the fragile world around him had collapsed yet again.
Charlie's heart ached with every tear that fell from Babe's eyes, each one like a dagger to his soul. He couldn't bear to see Babe cry and suffer any longer, but words failed him. There were so many things he wanted to say, but his voice felt trapped, unable to find the right words. All he could manage to say was,
"It's okay, my love. I'm here. Shhh, it's alright, I've got you." As he held Babe close, his own tears fell silently alongside his. But after months of separation, they finally embraced each other that day, and tired, they fell asleep in one another's arms.
